I just recently broke my hp pavillion laptop's lcd screen, and only part of it lights up and the rest of teh screen is fading away day by day. i just read the label saying dispose properly, lamp contains mercury. i still need the latptop to back up my data before i send it back to repair, but will i get mercury exposure by letting it sit in the rooom? i have already screwed around with the screen with my hands and ate food with it, I called the hp pavillion helpline and they just want to cover their asses by telling me its not safe to use it its simple, that it has a fire hazard. Im not worried about fire hazards, just the mercury, and I need it for school for the next few days. Does anyone know anything about mercury exposure from broken lcd screens? Thank you.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying that it's GOOD for you but people go off the deep end about some of this stuff. When I was a kid we had a bottle of mercury and I used to play with it. It was a blob about the size of a golf ball and I used to roll it back and forth in my hands and even on my bare stomach while watching TV. We also used to play "mummy" and wrap each other up in this "gray tape" from head to toe. We later found out that was asbestos tape. I remember chewing on it. That was almost 50 years ago now and I'm not dead yet......AND I smoked about 2 packs of cigs a day for over 40 years. I'm not encouraging you to try any of this but I am saying that you don't have to freak out.
