Mercury comes under heavy metal category like lead, arsenic, cadmium, etc. It is generally not found in the foods we consume, but yes, increasing amount of it is now avaible in fish coming from poluuted water ( due to industrial wasteges being dumped).
these heavy metal can be dangerous and fatal, because once it enters the body it replaces the common complexing/chelating ion like K, Na, Ca, Mg, etc and disturbs the normal functioning of the body.
