Mental illness: legitimate or extremely over-diagnosed?

My friend's 5 year old was just diagnosed with ADHD because of normal 5 year old behavior by some doctor, and now that poor little girl has to go to weekly therapy sessions and take daily medication, not to mention every adult in her life is telling her that there's something wrong with her. It just reinforced a belief that I've had for a while - that 90% of people diagnosed with mental illness DON'T HAVE a mental illness.

Case in point: I saw a statistic that almost everyone suffers from depression at some point in their lives. If almost everyone goes through something, doesn't that by definition make it normal?

Even on these boards, someone posts a question like "I feel anxious about social situations" and 10 people post saying they should get psychiatric help.

I'm Not saying mental illnesses don't exist - I'm just saying I don't think that all the people I know who've been diagnosed with mental illness, myself included, have a mental illness. Years ago, I was diagnosed with depression after going to the doctor for sleeping excessively. It turned out later I really had mono. The only way my "depression" ever impacted me was keep me from joining the army.

What do you think? Please post your opinion. 10 pts best answer :)
