Menengitis? (sp?)

We were told that it was passed from contact. Now when I say contact, I mean from saliva, mucus, coughing and throwing saliva and mucus through the air. I wouldn't doubt toilet seats, but I hold my shit until home anyways, so I'm not worried about that.

It's unlikely that you'd get meningitis from a toilet seat. Most bacteria and viruses have a very short life when exposed to the air. Less than a second in many cases.

And given that the transfers all require wet transfers like mucus or kissing unless you're sitting on a wet toilet seat you've got little to worry about. Besides, again, you actually have to injest or breathe it in. So you'd have to actually lick the wet toilet seat.

And let's face facts: if you're licking wet toilet seats you've got way bigger problems than meningitis.

Really, there's very few disease you can actually get from a toilet seat (assuming you're using it properly and not sitting on a shit covered seat)

But from straightdope.com here's a better article: linkity clickity readity.

Ryan and I go to the same school, and man its pretty scary. One of the kids almost had to have his legs amputated because of it. It needs to be fixed. Shutting down the school.. well, I dont know about that. But take a day off, clean the school and all sports related places, the kids who DO have meningitis should stay home until they are 100% CLEAR, not 99%.

Mostly its the football team, but lately its been spreading.

meningitis attacks quickly, so know the symptoms WELL. if you get a neckache or get achey AT ALL tell your parents. i like you guys, i don't want to see anything happen to you guys

I'm personally ok. Nothing wrong, yet. If anything was to happen though, you know I would be on top of it and getting it checked out. So don't worry too much. Other people on here are all probably like, "Damnit, get it and DIE!!".

Well, as I stated, closing the school won't do anything. Removing the infected students will. The problem is how do you know if you're infected? The usual test for meningitis is a spinal tap. VERY painful. It appears a lot like the flu, the test is expensive and painful and most doctors are reluctant to suggest it.

The problem is that if it's not caught early it can kill inside a few days. So the wait and see attitude leads to a lot of very seriously ill patients.

The best bet for you guys is to wash your hands frequently (carry hand sanitizer), don't share your drinks with anyone and make sure you use only clean towels after gym class. Don't eat from other people's plates or even eat food they've touched (as in they pour you a few skittles from their bag... get your own skittles bitch!)

I'm in school for medical assisting right now. Most of my teachers are doctors. I told my doctor teacher about this situation. She agreed that the school should have shut down and cleaned up from the first moment it they discovered the meningitis and not waited for more students to fall ill. It'll spread like like crazy if it's the bad kind. She said the bacterial meningitis can be EXTREMELY bad. Neither of the two are good to have and can do some serious damage.

To be honest with you, it could have gone there, but it sounded like a complaint about the school too, so it'll work just fine here.

Well, we thought that there was another one sick. He's a football player, and he left school yesterday early because of it. They did the spinal tap test on him and found out that it wasn't what they thought it was.

Then I heard today on the bus that some kid from a school about a block away got meningitis. Who knows what they are going to do. Probably nothing since it's Thursday and there isn't any school tomorrow. So, I doubt anything really.

Yea Ryan, you're talking about casey right? THey couldnt get the fluid from the spinal tap until the 22nd try. His back was killing him.
