Menengitis? (sp?)

Lately at our school, 6 people have fallen ill to the deadly virus menengitis. I heard yesterday from numerous people that if one more person gets sick, that they would close down the school and clean it.

This is what I don't understand. Why don't they just do it now. One person in the hospital is already deathly sick because of it, so you would think that the school would get an idea that it's probably pretty fucking bad.

Now, you're probably saying, "Aww hell, he just doesn't want to go to school." Well, you're right. But I've mentioned this to about all my my family members and people I know and they completely agree that it should be done.

I say, lets write a WTF.com petition. :)

they SHOULD close the school. i girl i went to high school with lost her hands and feet and almost died because of the virus.

THEY NEED TO CLEAN YOUR SCHOOL!

she got hers in college, but still. it is SERIOUS stuff.

You realize you just corrected his spelling error with a spelling error, don't you? It's Meningitis! Dictionary is your friend too!

I totally agree. the school should shut down and clean up. That virus is VERY contagious. It's not like a cold which is non-lethal, but the meningitis disease can be and is HIGHLY contagious!

If the student were to have the bacterial type, then antibiotics should do just fine, but if it's the viral kind, then there isn't much they can do but wait it out. Not everyone dies form meningitis but if they are immune compromised, then they may have a problem.

Here's some info on it:

There's plenty of other information about it, and you can get a vaccination for it as well if you are worried. I'd suggest staying away from anyone that appears to have the start of the flu and has most of his or her muscle aches in their necks. It doesn't mean they have meningitis, but those are a couple of symptoms. Don't freak out, just try to be careful.

Meanwhile. Ryan! WTF does this seem like a family problem to you? This belongs in Life Sucks at least! Moving...

Well first off, although it's a little scary... school wouldn't exactly be cut off for even a little. Well, maybe a week. It usually takes a lot more than seven cases for something to be considered an epidemic. But what would they all do? Let's take a look.

First: Yes, the school you go to would be shut down.

Second: You and all of your friends will get to go to a disease treatment center (if your local hospital is not capable of handling you all), where you all will be run through a gammut of tests by guys standing around in white suits with those funny looking masks.

Third: All those of you that come back with positive results will be taken to hospitals or if it's not bad enough, sent home with the proper anti-biotics.

Fourth: After about four to six days after all negative results are in, you and your friends are going to get to crowd into a neighboring school while the one you're used to going to is busy being sterilized.

And how do I know all this? It just so happens that, that is exactly what happened to me and my school chums back in '86 when I was in the third grade and a Scarlet Fever epidemic scare arose.

Have fun Ry.... that's all I can really say (I actually thought it severely sucked).

EDIT: It actually took 16 reported cases before the Center for Disease Control came in on the situation and shut down the school... just thought I should add that.

Jeez Jane, did you even read my entire post? If you noticed I was talking about (in my case), Scarlet Fever... which does carry with it an infection in the lungs. THAT'S what the anti-biotics were for. Now if you ask me what specifically treats meningitis, I wouldn't be able to tell you... I was simply going off of MY own experience.

ahhhh i missed the scarlet fever part.

ya, they can't give meds for viral meningitis, i believe. they put ya in the hospital. i think they have anti-biotics for bacterial meningitis. i don't know though

Well, all those people saying "they're going to close the school to clean it" are stupid. Meningitis isn't something you can avoid by having a CLEAN school. It's spread by close physical contact. Sex, kissing, sharing drinks, coughing etc...

So cleaning the entire school won't make a difference because it's not coming from the school but rather the people IN the school.

From WebMD:

Close contact

i'm pretty sure it can also be passed by toilet seats and dirty hands and crap. also, in colleges...the showers. thats one of the big reasons we wear shower shoes. thank God i got my vaccination.
