Memories

I think most people can think of plenty of albums they like and respect, but never want to listen to because those album bring back unpleasant memories. What do you do with those albums? Do you set them aside for several years, intending to return to them? Do you junk them? Do you play them anyway?

One of the best and worst things about music is the way a song or album can act as a snapshot. So-called "guilty pleasures" tend to be "bad" albums that we associate with good memories.

Thoughts?

I agree that guilty pleasures seem to be albums that evoke good memories but are not deemed to be good albums by others...

To be honest I don't think I have any bad memories with music.

Even though I only heard them this year (yeah I suck) 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins and Heartbeats by the Knife make me feel Nostalgic.

As for old stuff that's sort of a guilty pleasure, Dookie will always have a place in my heart (and iPod).

There's a couple of Warren Zevon I have a fairly hard time listening to, because they often evoke the memories of someone I was in a very serious relationship with, because they happened to be a couple of her favorites.

Also, the lyrics kind of apply to my general sense of loneliness.

A lot of crappy late-90s pop brings back memories of sitting in a taxi on the way to school every morning. Not bad memories exactly, just very boring ones

I have this phobia that I'll be playing Born To Run and get pulled over for playing the stereo too loud. I'm not concerned about the ticket so much as the album being ruined for me. ;)

I agree with that, but sometimes the bad memories are just so unpleasant and they're so strongly associated with a given album that it's pretty much unbearable. I don't really have a problem with albums that helped me through crummy times, because at least I know they have some theraputic value. The albums that just seem to drag me back to a bad time and leave me...well, those are the ones I can't play.

You've just described my experiences with Brothers In Arms, except it was a regular bus and not a taxi. Come to think of it, I wore down dozens of cassettes on the bus ride to school. :D
