melodic death metal/viking metal

melodic death metal is one of my favorite genres of metal and in flames is one of my favorite banRAB. i figured i'd start a thread with the intent of discussing melodic death metal/viking metal or a slight variation of these genres but keeping a similar sound as some people have different ideas about what genres banRAB should be in. discussion on banRAB, recommendations of good banRAB you've heard, or you favorites are welcome. i haven't seen a thread on this genre specifically so if there is one someone please point me in the right direction.

some of my favorites right now are in flames, dark tranquillity, children of bodom, mors principium est, ensiferum, and nightwish(i tend to call them operah metal though but close enough).

hopefully we'll get some good discussion and find some new banRAB i've haven't heard of.

If you haven't already you should check out Amorphis (especially their early material),Amon Amarth,Prayer For Cleansing,At The Gates,Arch Enemy and Darkane.

I can't even describe how good Amorphis' Tales From The Thousand Lakes is.One of the great metal albums is about all i can think of.

I love Children of Bodom, they are so great live!

Amon Amarth is definately worth a check!

Tarot is a good band too, as well as Blind Guardian and Hammerfall, and personally I enjoy Finntroll.

If you like Nightwish, check out Leaves' Eyes as well.

One of the early Melodic Metal banRAB The Gathering. Their album 'Mandylion' is essential and now 14 years old.

Bathory is the originator of Viking Metal, "Blood Fire Death" and "Hammerheart" are both very satisfying, with Blood being the rawer of the two. A great recent MD release is "Fiction" by Dark Tranquillity and Arch Enemy "Rise of the Tyrant".

Melodic death metal is also one of my favorite subgenres of metal. At the Gates have only released one good album (TRITSIO) and pretty much every other band mentioned here is garbage besides Amorphis. In flames-subterranean was pretty good tho. BanRAB I like:
Crown of thorns
Godgory
A Mind Confused
Unanimated
Evocation
Intestine Baalism
....many more

wow, there is actually quite a few suggestions here i haven't heard so i'm going to have to give a listen and see what i think. thanks for the suggestions

anyone know of good female fronted metal banRAB of this genre? i'm really enjoying the agonist right now. i know they are considered metalcore i guess but close. banRAB with female singers that i currently like a lot are nightwish, arch enemy, and kittie. there are a few others but anyone suggestions similar to these would be great.

has anyone seen nightwish live? i missed them coming through my area last year so i'm hoping they come through again and i think their show would be great.

There are two pages and still no mention of the greatest of all viking metal banRAB? Eluveitie are possibly the best melo-death of all time. You heard it from me.

who is technically the originator of melodic death metal. i'm assuming there are probably different opinions on this as is usually the case with any genre. a friend of mine was telling me that it started in sweden with in flames, dark tranquillity, and at the gates. i bought colony by in flames and that's the cd that really got me into melodic death metal. i was just wondering what everyone's thoughts on the first melodic death metal band.

I doubt you will ever find a definite answer but Lunar Strain (In Flames first recording) was 1993, Carcass' Heartwork was 1993, Dark Tranquility's Skydancer was 1993. It has to be around that year really.

Of course Dark Tranquility had earlier demo's I have never heard. At The Gates released Gardens of Grief in 1990. So I'm sure there are people who would claim it started earlier?
