Megamind is yet another one of those Dreamworks movie that tries decently hard to go for some Pixar/Disney moments of pathos and depth but they don't quite seem as geunine. But they make up for it with more laughs and sight gags and random refrences and hey at the end of the day as long as a movie is entertaining that's all that matters right? And I will say one thing about this movie: It defintley entertained me. I was not bored at all whatsover during any part of the movie (unlike Social Network) and the plot was easy enough to comprehend yet not dry or repetive enough to guess all the little twists. I could defintley buy a reason for Megamind being sad at supposedly killing Metro Man and losing his arch rival since after all, those who arch need someone to fight back or else it gets boring. And I could buy his transformation since he was really only a villian by circumstnace on how he was raised and being picked on by those around him. But actually manging to forge a decently intertwined relationship with Roxanne (who yeah is definite kidnap bait who dosen't do much physically but did have a lot of nice scenes with Megamind and did have some snide respondes every now and then) and realized he didn't have to be bad. So in the end it was all about everyone choosing who they wanted to be, not who the city defined them to be. Megamind chose to be a hero, Metro Man chose to be a musician far away from the busy crowds (though I wish we had some scenes of Metro Man besides just near the beginning and his surprise reappearence. Then again I don't know how much of a surprise it is due to how one of the trailers sort of spoils that) and Roxanne chose to get with the bad turned good boy.
And hey there were a lot of good jokes spread throughout this movie: Megamind not hearing his parents last words, Metro Man's rocket stroller knocking Megamind's into a prison, the device Megamind used to knock dodgeballs back at the other kids, Captain Metro supposedly senting Megamind a watch to count his multiple life sentances, Hal's intentional creepiness on being so forward with Roxanne (yeah really wedding photogrpaher. Stupid for another reason guy), Roxanne not eing amused by the traps (though truthfully that joke would of worked better if it hadn't been spoiled in all the trailers) Megamind's shock at supposedly killing the guy, the musical montage of him causing destruction and Minion sayind he'd be cheered up with a kidnapping, having to apologize for destroying some of his robots, trying to train Hal by dressing up as a Jor-El ripoff, the name for his newest evil cape being supposedly so dramatic, goading Hal/Titan to fight him and Titan actually wanting to kill him (I kind of wish Titan became more of an anti hero then a villian but I guess even in this movies' sort of shades of gray approach they needed some more definite blacks), Metro Man trying to sneak off but being discovered by Roxanne and Megamind, him doing his self trestospective at super light speed, Megamind switching with Minion during the fight and then tossing Minion at the water at the end who tried to make a seemingly emotional death. And yeah the ending was kind of cute but another thing the trailer spoiled. Still I did really like this movie and found it rather engaging and though a bit forumaltic, used that forumla rather well. And hey there is room for another movie if they want to go down that road though probably be better to come up with more original material since not every Dreamworks film deserves a franchise.
