Mechanical problems with 1994 Ford Explorer?

I have a 1994 Ford Explorer, it has automatic 4x4 push button on the dash. My problem is that it seems like the truck is always in 4 wheel drive, when you first take off from a stop it seems like it is in low gear. I am getting 15.5 mpg hwy, so not sure, it seems to drive fine on the hwy.
My second problem is that there is a noise from the front of the vehicle..appears to be coming from the passenger side, possibly the front wheel. It happens when ever I turn to the right, such as an on ramp or changing lanes, it sounds just like a twin prop airplane sitting on a runway getting ready to take off. If I am driving straight there is no noise at all that I can notice, but if I change lanes to the right, it is back until I start going straight again. again...strangely.....when I am in the inside lane of the highway it is pretty much there even when going straight, but on the outside lane there is no noise.....does this make sense ??....What are the possibilities?...options...???
