Mechanic ?-re: linkage /or/ steering column problem on 95 ford taurus 3.0?

My shifter hasn't been working on my 1995 Ford Taurus 3.0 for a couple months now. However, my husband who does know 'a little' about cars but is not a mechanic has talked to a few people and they showed him how to change the gears from under the hood, which is at the point we are at now. In the beginning, I just had no reverse (but reverse works under the hood manually) and I was just 'living with it' but as of 2 days ago the shifter wont even go into drive anymore and I'm not comfortable manually putting the car into drive myself being a woman and having my 3 young daughters in the car. I am expected to put the parking brake on and go under the hood and do this???? NO, I don't think I can do that. So my ???? to all you knowledable mechanics out there is 'Is there a way for my husband to determine if we need to replace the steering column or can he try and adjust the linkage in some way. Like I said he only knows a little about cars and he did mess with the linkage a little bit about 1 1/2 months ago but that didn't help. But then again, he is no expert and could have been doing the wrong thing. Please can someone give me some advise that we can try ourselves and that is the cheapest way to go?
Thanks to any and all for reading!!!!

there is a piece that unlocks the shifter went you turn the key to start the car. if it broke off the you can't shift. remove steering wheel until you find the broken part it is white and if you find white flakes on the floor that is you problem.

Another could be the links from the column to the transmission

check both before removing anything.

yes common issue with the taurus

the steering column goes bad in these

junkyard for another one

and ask around for someone to replace it for around 150 tops maybe

good cars the 3.0L engines run forever with no issues

but columns and trannies in them fail commonly
