bad (see details)? I need help/advise from a Mechanic PLEASE???? OK, I have a 91 Ford Explorer 4.0 4x4 and it wont start. It will turn over but has no spark or gas coming thru line. We thought it may have been the fuel pump and had a 'mobile mechanic' come over to the house this afternoon. He seems to believe that it could be the 'ignition switch' causing the problem. He didn't bring all his 'testers, etc.' but took it apart and tried to start it (as if stealing it) but it still would not start. By the way, when it was running, we did have problems on 2 occasions with it not starting, but then were able to start it OK and never thought nothing of it. Also, the key although it seems to work/fit in the ignition, does not work on any of the doors, if that is any help or has anything to do with anything. So I would like some advise on 'symptoms of a bad ignition switch' from all you smart mechanics out there because this 'mobile mechanic' is coming back tomorrow with his tester which he said has 'extra ?power? or something that might help it start? What do you guys think? (There is at least 5 gallons of gas in it, it turns over, no spark, no fuel coming thru lines and no noise coming from gas tank when key turned part way, without actually trying to start)

Lose the mobil guy. Any codes? Go to IATN.NET FIND A DRIVABULITY ASE L1 CERTIFIED pro near you. A tow charge will be worth it. AS for a best guess I would look at the distributor pick-up
or TFI module. Disconnect the spout and try to start it.

if it was the switch then it wouldn't turn over no fuel pressure, no spark does the fuel pump come on at all did you check all the fuses this isnt easy to diag on the net but it sounds to me that your mechanic is in way over his head

a bad ignition switch will cause one to loose fire all the sudden like that, and the only way to know for sure is test it for voltage at the coil, and see if its getting power when the key is on,then you,ll know for sure, there's no way to guess at it though and he should have brought his testers to see if it was getting any power to the coil,if not i would suspect a bad ignition switch, good luck.

i can only add that i have that same suv2000 4x4 4.0 and i have a diff problem noise related...but i can rule out fuel pump because theres no spark either.....now im guessing ure key's chip its messup. or activated ure autotheft, the way u do this its by putting a spare key on the ignition and trying to crank it which of course wont make ure engine run but turn the dash on, what i did was disconnected battery for about an hour and reconnected after try the right key and the suv did turn on,****but the dome light remain on even with the vehicle driving...what i did was take the back light out with the car running and it deactivated the courtesy lights after about 10miles i put the light back on and my suv's been running fine since.....
