There's no need for cheap shots here. I'm just saying that if
a cookbook is not designed around a specific diet, it doesn't
have a lot to offer when better recipes can be found in so
many other dedicated cookbooks and on so many websites.

That sounds really good. How open are you to ethnic cuisines?
I find you can really spruce up otherwise bland ingredients
with novel flavor combinations. Most fast food and processed
food is intentionally not designed to taste terribly unique
and to be duplicatable around the world. We only develop
tastes for fast food by eating them often enough to get used
to them. Otherwise, they don't even taste that good.

Your body is giving you warning signs that something is wrong. I
don't know why your doctor didn't treat your symptoms more seriously,
but you certainly can. How about your heart health? Have you had a
stress test or an EKG lately?

Processed foods are the bane of our existence.

Ask Google for avocado "recipes -guacamole" that's a minus sign tucked
next to the word and you will get hits like this
http://www.avocadorecipes.net/ :)

Here's a salad recipe to get you started

1 can of black beans, rinsed
1 cans worth of frozen corn, thawed
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 scallions, sliced
1 avocado, chunked
1/4 cup cilantro chopped (it's optional, but I like cilantro)

If you like a little heat chop up a jalapeno and add it to the bowl.

Mix all together in a large bowl

Make a dressing of lime and oil, squeeze the juice of 2 limes into a
bow and whisk in about 2 tablespoons of oil. If it doesn't emulsify
in a few seconds, add a little more oil. Whisk in a little salt and a
lot of pepper. If it's too harsh for you, add a little sugar or
honey.

If you want to make dinner out of it, add some frozen and thawed
precooked shrimp. You know what size they are; you see them at
parties with cocktail sauce. If you want to get fancy, serve it on a
bed of torn lettuce (red, butter etc) and you can accompany it with a
couple of corn tortillas. Do you know how to warm up tortillas? Use
a cast iron skillet and just keep turning them until they're warm.
Flour tortillas bubble up, corn not so much - if at all. Stay away
from the flour tortillas when you're dieting or if you have wheat
allergies and corn is healthier for you anyway.

I second Michel on this. Of all the "diets" out there the only one that
doesn't eschew one food group or another is Weight Watchers. What it
teaches is portion control and an awareness of what one is eating.

This is a life-skill. No other gimmicky diet plan does this. Weight
Watchers is a plan that you can stay on for life once you reach your
goal weight. It's not a 'diet' as much as it's better way to regard the
food you eat.

That said, might I suggest that before each meal, you have a ginormous
green salad and a couple of glasses of water. This will fill you up and
you will eat less.

To lose weight you must lower the amount of calories you consume to
below what your body needs to stay even. Exercise burns more calories
than sitting around on your butt, that's why it's recommended.

I have a problem with people telling me to "get exercise". I get bored
on a treadmill. I lose count on the machines at the gym. If this is
what your situation is, try to find a Gold's Gym or another one that
offers Les Mills programs. I do the Body Pump. It's a weight-training
class that uses barbells and hand weights to do the same thing that the
machines do, but there are instructors there to make sure your form is
correct and to count for you. There is also music and other people to
interact with. I think it's much more enjoyable than lonely machines.

http://www.lesmills.com/global/bodypump/about-bodypump.aspx

You might want to start your exercising with water aerobics. It's the
gentlest of all exercise programs. Then you can work your way up to some
of the other ones.

I think you should be commended for taking the first step in becoming a
healthier person. Good luck

I sometimes impulse buy. Sometimes not. More than likely the impulse buy
will be something that I didn't know was on sale or is a new item I didn't
know that store carried. The only problem I might have is if I am shopping
for dinner that night. In that case I may wind up picking up more food for
that meal than I can possibly eat. Not foods I have to cook mind you but
prepared things like salad bar or the cold food bar at Central Market.

The doctor already gave you the good advice. Get a consultation with a
dietitian. They don't push liquid shakes. They will teach you about the
foods that are good for you, what you should restrict and what you
should avoid completely.

Learn about heart coronary artery disease. Basically, it is a buildup of
plaque on the artery walls and when they get completely blocked they no
longer supply blood to your heart and areas of the heart die. Those
blockages are mostly fat and cholesterol. It is not like they are
clogged up all the way along like a dirty old sewer pipe. It is more
likely one place in one or more arteries.

Contributing factors are smoking, lack of exercise, high blood pressure,
excess weight, bad diet and..... your genes. If you have aunts, uncles
or parents who had heart attacks your chance of heart problems is
increased.

If you smoke, quit. Not next year, next month or next week. Quit now.
Aside from the increased risk of heart disease and cancer, because open
heart surgery is hard enough of a person. You will have fluid build up
in your lungs and it hurts like hell to cough. Bad enough for a non
smoker... hell for a smoker.

For diet..... cut out fried foods. The saturated fats, hyrdrogenated
fats and transfats are deadly. Eliminate fatty foods. Switch to low fat
dairy products. Cut back on salt. Avoid commercial produced baked
goods. Eat lean meats. Cut the fat off meat. Remove the skin from chicken.

Eat fruit and vegetables with every meal and snack on fruits and
vegetables instead of sweets.

Divide you dinner plate into quarters. Only one quarter of it should be
meat and one quarter starch. The other half should be vegetables.

Start getting exercise. Most people in their 50s are overweight and
sedentary. Don't go all out and break yourself. Start easy and increase
effort gradually.

I think the water thing only works if you are one of those people who goes
all day without drinking anything. My daughter used to be this way. I had
to force her to drink water. I know a couple of other people who do the
same. They all have the same reason. They don't want to be bothered to
have to use the bathroom. So they figure if they don't drink, they can go a
few more hours without having to stop what they are doing. In my daughter's
case it became a medical problem and she quickly wised up. Wish I could say
the same for the other two. They are older but certainly not any wiser.

What can help is to start off your meal with a green salad, some raw veggies
or a broth based soup. Either a plain broth or one with mainly vegetables
and perhaps a little meat. If you opt for the salad or veggies, be mindful
of the dressing. Personally I like just a squeeze of lemon and no dressing.
If you want dressing though, probably the best choice would be an oil and
vinegar dressing. There are some "diet" dressings that are okay from a
calorie standpoint. But they can be loaded with all sorts of weird
chemicals that you don't necessarily want. And the fat free ones often
contain sugar or other sweeteners. Another thing you can do if you like it
is have a serving of tomato juice or V-8. All of these things can help fill
you up so you'll eat less dinner or lunch.

honestly, weight watcher has helped me to lose a lot of weight, and right
now i have gained some back due to the pita of the house burning, but i find
there are many good habits that have stuck, other things along with ww is
making sure your portions are correct, a food scale for that, and writing a
food journal so you are very aware of everything you eat, good luck losing

one of the things i do is look at all the sale ads for the stores before we
shop, i know what is healthy and not... you can find this out by looking up
the data if you aren't sure, after i have made the grocery list of possible
items, meaning,
-we must like it
-it must be a good price
-it must be healthy most of the time
-and the store actually still has it to sell when i go to get it

after this list is made we go and shop, bring it home and put it away, then
from what is in the house i make up menuse... i don't do a week at a time
now but i used to, now i can just do a day or two ahead... also, if you have
a freezer or pantry, make a list of that food so you can sit down and make
menus not keep running to freezer/pantry to see if you have xxx
