MAZDA RX7 COUPE 83' CLASSIC transmission rebuild?

The guy whose selling says "Transmission needs work." I'll assume the worst. So how much would it cost to have a shop rebuild a 5 speed manual transmission (assuming it is a manual; if its not I won't buy it)? He's only asking $500 and its otherwise in great shape. Also, if there is something bad about an 83 rx-7 let me know.
Thats not what I was asking! Thats just how the seller listed it. And FYI a classic is defined as anything 25 years or older.
 
$500. sounds a bit high for a transmission needing work. Sometimes they are so trashed they can't be rebuilt.
The Rx-7 is the world's finest wind up car!
