We have a 1999 Mazda Millenia S with the Miller Cycle engine. Three weeks ago I asked about service code P0431 and I received some answers. I continued to research this issue and I found tha Mazda issued service bulletin 01-003/01 dated Feb 28, 2001. The bulletin indicates that the problem could be caused by oversensitive rear O2 sensors. This problem started when we had all 4 O2 sensors replaced about two years ago. Other service info says that the problem can be caused by corroded terminals on the O2 sensors. Has anyone resolved a problem with DTC code P0431 without replacing the catalytic converters?
Yes, a new catalytic converter is at least $800 here in PA. I'm not convinced that the CAT is bad which is why I am wondering if anyone has corrected this problem without replacing the converter.
We've had issues with this vehicle. At 88,000 miles we had to rebuild the engine. The engine guy said that the gears on the dual cams were not properly aligned which caused the valves to burn. Sympton was hesitation, almost stalled, when you pressed the accelerator to the floor from a dead stop (example, entering the interstate). This has nothing to do with the CATS but I wanted to make the other answerer aware that there may be issues.
