I have a '92 Mazda Miata, and the headrest speakers are blown. I was wondering if I should replace them with with replacement rectangular speakers, or the Clearwater circular speakers. I'm also debating replacing them with regular 3 1/2in speakers. This is a cheaper option, but will these distort at high volumes? I replaced the radio from stock, to a SONY (it has both of these on the front) 45Wx4 XR-CA330 I don't know which is the model number...

This is one of those dipshit gizmo things auto makers add to their cars from time to time.
No audiophile would shove his/her head into a speaker.
The stereo "image" may be illusive in cars, but good quality speakers, preferably 2 pair, or whatever, should create a suitable psudo-image, when balanced correctly. Good quality, simple equipment.
Disconnect them head whangers. Fit other speakers into the car, pref. behind seats, or in the doors.
I know the MX5/Miata has few options for such arrangements, so fit the very best speakers you can in the optimal space available.
Use 2 way speakers, try JBL or other speakers with excellent low end, and forget about subs, and multi hoodoos, just a stacker in the boot, and a great head unit, with a reasonable grade amp, dont go for BIG power, go for CLEAN sound: less distortion the better at volume.

ENJOY!!
But please dont be antisocial, playing load music where it may disturb others is a pricks act, dont do it. (and you risk coming out to your car and there is a brick through the window)

Wow, someone has some issues...

I'd shy away from the cheapo rectangular replacements. I tried them and they lasted all of a few weeks. They tend to be paper and deteriorate quickly with the sun heating the seats up in the summer time.

I'd go with the clearwater. They have more engineering into their design and build.

I would also look at adding a more powerful deck, or a small amplifier like a punch 75 or something. I did not add anything like a sub because there just is no room.

If you have the funds, going with a better set of 6 1/2" speakers in the door coupled with the amp made a HUGE difference in not only loudness (with top down you can actually hear the music) but also in quality. I also added a deck that had controls for self increasing loudness at higher speeds.

One advantage of the Clearwater speakers for the Miata is the wiring harness that is premade to fit.
But there are some good to great 3 1/5 inch speakers out there for a better price.
The problem with the head rest speakers we have is a wiring issue (under the passangers seat) that some times kills the system. Which is why the Clearwater speakers may be best engineered for the Miata.
