i just test drive a 2.3 automatic mazda 3s. the engine sounds clean, it is quiet with no stuttering or unusual noise that i can hear. at higher speeds (above 30mph) i can hear a very loud "shhhhhhhh" sort of noise coming from the rear of the car. the sales person told me it was cause by an uneven tread on the rear wheels or a problem with the bearings and he said he can get it fixed. i want to know if that is the cause of the noise or is it something that is going to cost me a lot of money (thousands) to fix.

Rear end bearings are not that expensive and are easily repaired. If you are that interested in the car tell him to put a new set of tires on the rear, then deal with the bearings yourself after getting the price knock down a bit!
