May I legally publish these recipes in a book? I do not know their author.?

I found a little wooden index card box at a local thrift store, and bought it. When I got home, I noticed the index cards all have recipes on them. They seem like really old, (the recipes call for laird?) and the writing looks to be done with calligraphy in ink. I thought it might be cool to publish it and entitle it "The Little Wooden Box". I don't know how to reach the family for their permission. Do I need it?
