Today, the number of venues open up Mature Animation Venues is very limited.
On TV, we have Adult Swim, which, hasn't run action animation for a while now. They have locked themselves into a once a week deal. Sci-Fi's Ani-Monday has had some promise ever since it debuted but simply has never expanded.
Among our online competitors, we have Youtube, Crunchy Roll and to a lesser extent Funimation's site.
The cancelation of Toonami was no doubt a big hit for the Mature Animation Direction.
Recently, we've been getting some very promising news.
Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel was proclaimed to be driven by their intent to provide a venue for the 20-35 male demographic. Cookie Jar also recently suggested they want to tackle this demographic as well. Furthremore, Nick's currently Friday and Saturday lineup attempt to provide a venue right now. Even 4Kids has weighted in to say they wouldn't mind production of shows for that demographic in an attempt to erase some of the harsh feelings people have about them post Onepiece snaffu.
I'm a big fan of healthy competition. It can make an otherwise bad lineup actually have to strive to be good. Toonami and Adult Swim's downfall may have been the lack of competition.
So what does everyone think? Are all these looming deals going to lead to a stronger and healthier Mature Action Animation block or are we going to see more of the same and no new venues / quickly shutdown venues.
