Matious/Crowquil/JJJ Compilation Thread

I liked the compilation. He has one of the most natural sounding voices around. It all sounRAB so easy to him. Do you like Joe C

Alright, these guys are solid. They got a little Neil Young\America sound to them especially in the song "West Falls" GREAT song.

I have these three praises for Okkervil River
1. Great range of influence (They seem to just play what they want to hear, I love that)
2. Outstanding\Interesting Lyrics I was reaching for lyrics search within seconRAB of each cut.
3. They follow Occams Razor. In other worRAB they understand simple works, no over production, just their instruments and their inspiration again I dig that.

In the spirit of fairness I'd offer the following complaints as well
1. Poor song structure. Most of their songs struggle to transition from movement to movement as smoothly more polished acts in the genre.
2. Singers range is limited; not a bad singer, just limited. A lot of songs sound the same once he starts singing, I like the harmonizing a lot though.

This is the kind of band that could grow on me, Nice compilation, I'll buy an album and give it a try.

I'm sure he'll grow on me with time. I don't think he sucks, far from it, just that you can tell he is sort of limited like most people are vocally. Bob Dylan couldn't sing a lick and he did alright for himself.

Daniel Johnston
danieljohnston.jpg

Daniel Johnston has always been an artist's artist though hes gained somewhat of a cult following over the years particularly due to the documentary the Devil and Daniel Johnston. He's been acclaimed by everyone from grunge musicians Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder to classic rocker David Bowie to indie veterans Sonic Youth, Beck, Yo La Tengo and the Flaming Lips and to current indie sensations Bright Eyes, Death Cab for Cutie and Okkervil River.

Daniel Johnston's music could range from piano driven, to just an acoustic guitar to a full band (all instruments usually played by Johnston himself.) Johnston cited the Beatles, particularly Lennon as his biggest influences though they aren't apparent in his music. His lyrics were often childish to match his voice that at times could be painful but was always honest.

1. Devil Town
2. Mind Contorted
3. True Love Will Find You In the End
4. Love Will See You Through
5. Some Things Last a Long Time
6. Crazy Love
7. Lennon Song

Well i'm going to make a level 2 to Okkervil River for you, i'll put on some songs like Black that I think will show you what i'm talking about. That tracklist doesn't hold any of his more emotive vocal works.

I have only listened to the Ben Harper compilation so far. I like his voice, and of course I have heard it before, but his music is quite generic to my ears. Nothing has stayed within my listening radar. Keep them coming though!
