I have a problem in my book that says 8 to the square route and the there's a negetive on the outside and I think that's an imaginary number but my question is can a square route be a rational or irrational number and please explain how it i can tell when a square route like that is irrational or rational.
Please help
thank you.

a square root can be a rational number if it comes out to be a solid number.

Example: The square root of 144 is a rational number because the square root is 12.

However, the square root of -8 is simply 'i' multiplied by a radical 8.

I think that the square root of -8 is irrational. First off because it is imaginary and secondly it is not a solid integer.
