Match Point

Haven't seen it, but although the reviews were terrible when it was in the cinemas there was a rave review in the press when it came out on DVD. Something along the lines of, Woody Allen understanRAB rich British people better than British film makers so he's better equipped to make a film about them.
 
haven't seen it, but am a big fan of woody allen - i thought there were some favourable, cliche ridden, return to form reviews tho'?

and it gets a 7.9 on the IMDB which is pretty good. keep meaning to get it out on DVD sometime - the wife might just about agree, seeing as Woody isn't actually in this one.

i'm sure those who have a problem with him are missing out big time tho' - a lot of his earlier films are genius.

No -- Enjoyable enough but could have been brilliant with better editing and a better script. Certainly the best Allen's done for a while though, liked the 'luck' theme.
 
I enjoyed the film up untill the last third when it suddenly turned in to a different film. It just came out of nowhere. I really couldn't believe the guy would have the guts to do something like that.
 
Exactly. It was billed as a "Thriller", but where were the "Thrills"? All I saw for three quarters of the movie where some upper middle class burkes contemplating their navels while shagging about and then, as if from nowhere, it turns into a "he's murdered his lover will he get away with it"? film noirish job, in which the coppers were too thick to tie their own shoe laces, then, twenty minutes later, it's all over.
 
I liked it- the ending was very good and thought provoking and the acting wasn't that bad either. JRM is a better actor than a lot of people are willing to believe- another actor who is discounted due to his good looks.
 
Even though I'm a huge fan of Woody Allen's films I've never seen Match Point.:o

It came out on a wave of hype and the early 00's saw a something of a Woody Allen renaissance in Hollywood, which although I welcomed it, I was also a bit sceptical, especially after the dreadful Anything Else and Hollywood Ending.
It seemed every new Woody Allen film was been marketed as a 'return to form' only to find that this was really wasn't the case at all.

But a friend of mine (not a fan of Allen's) said the film was quite good, so I guess I'll have to give it a try at some point.

I hear his next film has Penelope Cruz in it, this'll be interesting.
