Mastodon

I'd choose Leviathan over Crack The Skye any day. The intensity of the music really suits the album concept, and what a concept it is. You can almost feel the sea-sickness coming on.

mastodon is pretty unique. i've been into them for several years. stoner metal is what i might call it. i could be wrong. saw them at ozzfest 2004 or 5, they rocked out pretty good. i give em a 8.

Leviathan is sweet and is the best point of intro., "Hearts Alive" being the most Mastodon-esque track which sound like Yes if they had been brought up on thrash and melodic death metal. Very heavy, complex and beautiful. Also, if you like drumming, you can't beat Brann Dailor.

While I like all of their albums, Crack the Skye was probably my favorite. Just an extremely cohesive album that blenRAB together Mastodon's trademark sludgy sound and flair for experimentation with classic rock. My favorite album of last year, although I might be biased because I got to see them perform the whole album live and I touched Brent Hind's foot.

That would be Mastodon's Leviathan (2004). The song is "Blood and Thunder".

"I think that someone is trying to kill me
Infecting my blood and destroying my mind
No man of the flesh could ever stop me
The fight for this fish is a fight to the death

White whale - holy grail

What remorseless emperor commanRAB me
I no longer govern my soul
I am completely immersed in darkness
As I turn my body away from the sun

White whale - holy grail

Split your lungs with blood and thunder
When you see the white whale
Break your backs and crack your oars men
If you wish to prevail

This ivory leg is what propels me
Harpoons thrust in the sky
Aim directly for his crooked brow
And look him straight in the eye

White whale - holy grail"

Read a review that thier CD "Leviathan" was the second coming of "metallica and rush corabined."

While I didn't know there was a first coming of Metallica and Rush, I want you're opinions. I plan on picking the disc up today anyway, but if theres been a huge misunderstanding and it sucks, let me know.

We all have our opinions - some better than others. :P

Actually, there new stuff is quite a change from the rest of their music. I dig it, but I miss the heaviness. It's definitely worth checkin' out, though. Antonio posted a good review on it recently: Mastodon - Crack the Skye

I actually have to agree with you on the vocals, I'm not that much a fan of them. To be honest I usually hate growly vocals and it's pretty rare I like them as I prefer something that at least tries to reserable singing. But as long as they aren't that intrusive and over the top of the music I don't mind them.

Tis why I like Electric Wizard and High on Fire, they're vocals are growly but they're often drowned in the music which makes them that much more tolerable. Mastodon are bordering on too intrusive for my liking but definitely fantastic musicians and they come together really well as a group so I guess thats some thurabs ups for them.

I saw Mastodon on Tuesday night. It was my 7th or 8th time and I can safely say it's the best show I've ever seen them play. If you get a chance to see them on this tour, DO NOT MISS IT, especially if you dig Crack the Skye - they're playing the whole album.

This album's really pretty great, all considered. Beautiful guitar melodies, intricate rhythms, crushing riRAB, fine textures, and brilliant structure. What more could you want? This album shows commendable musical growth and, I'd go so far as to say, a welcome change of direction given that I'm not sure how much more they could do under the previous regime.

Hell, I need to grab all them albums anyway.

Oh god I listened to that song, there's no way I'm not laying hanRAB on their past three albums (excluding Blood Mountain).

Mastodon is one of my favorite metal banRAB that's out now. There latest release "Crack the Skye" is there best album to date IMO. Much more progressive sounding then there previous albums and cleaner vocals and a trippy story to boot.

Saw them live supporting tool back in 08, the kick beats nearly made me explode it was sooo loud, listening to the album now, so far i like it
