I'd like to recommend this film for fellow members.

Saw a preview screening last night and was very impressed. It was a really intellegent swashbuckle which made you really engage with the characters.

All of the performances were classy, even tho it should be a little odd to hear Russell Crowe and Billy Boyd bigging up the English Navy (sic).

Even a child actor (whose character undergoes something nasty very early on) played it just right, without any of the usual sickly sentimentality.

Hopefully more of the books will be adapted. I thoroughly enjoyed the romp.

I am tempted to watch (as it seems to be the only film released before last LOtR at the cinema) but Russell Crowe's weird accent is putting me off (especially the noise that came out his mouth in the trailer - my sister and I were peeing ourselves laughing at it).
 
Russell Crowe is perhaps the only obviouse problem with the film. While his actually performance is great his accent is a little offputting at first as hes supposed to be English yet clearly isnt :)

However you do get used to it after a while and it really is an enjoyable film so dont let it put you off. One thing though it is a movie you have to see at a cinema with a good sound system imho. The use of surround sound just to broadcast the creaks of the ship and the waves crashing around the hull really draws you into the action and helps make you feel like your actually there.

@cobaltmale: I'm personally not sure if I'd want any more of the books adapted. While it really was a top class film I cant help but think any sequels would just be too similar and would detract from the first.
 
Couldn't agree more with most of the above comments. I wasn't bothered by Russell Crowe's accent. I am a fan of the books and have never really seen Jack Aubrey as one for the King's English (as it would have been in his day). He is altogether too earthy for that. I did think, however, that he was rather more solemn than the Jack of the books and this made his joke about the lesser of two weevils seem out of character, which it isn't. For me, Paul Bettany stole the show; a superb performance. It isn't the first film he has stolen either. Anyone remember 'A Knight's Tale'?
