Mass-media sex ed - overrated?

I've started my sex life about 4 years ago. I had different partners - used condoms on people I didn't trust/date and used the pill or NOTHING with long term partners. Never have I been pregnant or had an abortion. I have been worried only 2 times until now, but not because my bf would have finished inside. Just menstruation kicking in 3 days later or so. I'm with my lover for 1 year together now and we have sex almost daily. We never used pills or anything else. Just condoms rarely when I had yeast infections (I have them - I believe - because I have a really bad digestive system, I had them also when virgin from too much meat, now from too much beer also).
Everybody is so panicked about STD's and pregnancy, they have sex in fear and wonder if they're pregnant even after condom usage AND pills. I only protected myself when I felt something could go wrong with a person. Just like drug campaigns, which I find ridiculous, they make you think sex is really dangerous and can kill you in an instant.
Sure, if you lose control, or don't take minor precautions, stuff can go terribly wrong, but this fear and repulsion media induces I really find sinister. And also a reason I have no TV (hate it!!)
Are people's fears induced by mass media or am I the irresponsible one? All I know is I needed my wits, not only contraceptives to be safe.
