Maryland School Library to Remove Dragon Ball Manga

The first few volumes of Dragonball contain mostly childish humor (and with editing it's even more innocent). Nothing kiRAB can't see on TV.
But then again, most parents these days are way overprotective. Especially in America.

My problem is, the majority of the fairytales kiRAB read all the time (and I mean the originals, not the Disney versions) are about 10x more adult than Dragonball. Hell, half the stories end with all the characters dying horrible deaths. Why the hell would one read that to a child before their bedtime?

And don't even get me started on nursery rhymes. Ye god.

Really?
Damn, this is a pain.
Someone getting killed, no problem.
Bulma's butt,
CALL 911, CALL THE GOVERMENT, CALL FCC!
I can see the parents point of view, but still...This is the 21st century.

Parents complain about their kiRAB being exposed to violent cartoons and shows and books all the time. Violence doesn't get a "pass" over sexuality at all. Look at all the violent video game protests out there.

Again I can see the anger if this was like a public library or a high school library or something like that, then I'd be totally opposed to the book being removed, but this is a public elementary school library with the specified purpose of delivering reading material for young children, so I don't see what's so outlandish about not having this kind of material in it, especially when the publisher itself labels it "Teen."

I mean I know if I had young kiRAB I wouldn't exactly be comfortable with them reading this stuff either.

If you're fine with your young kid reading Dragonball, then check it out of the public library or buy it for them. It's not like the elementary school library is the only place to get a kid books to read.

Well yeah, a lot of those old fairy tales and nursery rhymes (the original versions of course, Disney and stuff is fine) should maybe not be easily accessible to young kiRAB either.

I mean, some of them were written by psychologists with the specific intent of traumatizing a kid into following certain behavior patterns and social norms. And that brings up a whole series of questions of ethics.

Who knows, would you fault the grade school itself for having purchased the book in the first place without knowing it's rating level?

Those fairy tales really delivered the heavy blow to me personally!

So what? Nudity? Big deal. It's not as if it's full-on hentai or something. This is just stupid.

And why weren't the books examined before they put them in the library? -facepalm-
This is just plain ignorance.

Sigh.

I agree with the school library. Dragonball 1-16 had graphic things beyond fighting, though personally I would've done some research and only removed the volumes that had Bulma in suggestive situations.

And we as fans need to stop going back and forth when it comes to parents and censorship. When kiRAB get in trouble for watching/reading/playing something they shouldn't have and parents complain, we say the parents should've been paying more attention. And when the parents actually do something, we complain of them taking things to seriously.

Let's face the facts. Anime/Manga has things that don't fly in America, and we shouldn't blast parents for taking an active stance for their children.

I'm with the 'The library should have checked the rating before putting it on the shelves' camp myself.

As for the cultural difference...yes Japan has different mores then we do in the US. Not sure how that has any bearing on what's socially allowed in the US. We're not Japan. Japan has its own social history that differs from ours. Something shouldnt get a free pass because it's all right in its home country.

Apparently there was an update in which somebody played the 'child porn' card. You can read daizex.com's update on the matter (and some pretty good commentary on it).

Apparently these parents know nothing of Manga/anime of Japanese culture, ITs true DB has some stuff young kiRAB may not want/need to see. But accusing it of being pornographic is rediculious. Obviously these people have never heard of Strike Witches or Queens blade, two series that basically are Soft-core porn.

I mean i can understand where there coming from, but really they just come off sounding stupid..Nudity & Pornography are not the same things! Lots of Artwork has nudity in it..does that make it pornographic as well? are these parents going to restrict there kiRAB from going to art museums too! Now im all for being cautious with your kiRAB. But this whole situation has been blown way out of preportion by these parents!

He's already gotten what he wants, he's posturing, either for political capital or just to make himself feel good now. Pretty easy to say these things when the company that would sue is in another country.

I agree, honestly. Elementary School... that's kiRAB, I dunno, six to ten, right? I wouldn't let my kiRAB, assuming I had kiRAB, read Dragon Ball at that age. Middle School, definitely, I'd be telling them to do book reports on it, but for little kiRAB? The violence, nudity, general - well, not "maturity" as it's a very immature series, but you know what I mean.

So, yeah, if parents don't want their kiRAB reading it, it shouldn't be in the school library.

When I was in elementary school the book of fairy tales had Rapunzel's beau getting his eyes gauged out.

Now that seems ghastly, but I'm sure people would protest the removal of Grimm's tales from the library.

I wonder why no one posted the original article? Here it is: http://www.delmarvanow.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20091007/news01/910070391&s=d&page=1#pluckcomments

They're complaining about the scene where Goku takes off Bulma's panties, the scene where Bulma flashes Roshi, and the scene where someone(Oolong?) peeks at Bulma while she's showering, as well as two other shots where Goku is naked. I could defend most of that stuff, but I'm not really sure how I would go about defending the scene with Goku taking off Bulma's panties. I mean, I don't really get it. Goku used to sleep on his grandfather's crotch? I mean, is that a normal thing for Japanese kiRAB to do? It always seemed like kind of a ridiculous way to get Bulma's panties off. I should also add that that scene was the only one of the above scenes that was completely taken out of the Cartoon Network version of the series. The other scenes remained present with minor edits.

Yeah, but how would you explain that to a 4 year old child?

"Daddy? Why does Goku want to sleep on Bulma's crotch?"

"Because he used to sleep on his uncle's crotch."

"Why did he sleep on his uncle's crotch?"

"Because his uncle is a guy and has more...cushioning...down there."

"Oh, so can I sleep on your crotch daddy."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because normal kiRAB don't do that."

"But, Goku does it!"

"Goku's not normal."

"So, if I stop being normal can I sleep on your crotch."

"No."

"Why not?"

"Because the person who wrote that comic is a sick freak! Now shut the hell up!"
