Martin Scorsese has lost out yet again

Yet again he's missed out.
He missed out on the Oscar for best director.
And he also lost out on the Oscar for best film.

So much for all the talk that Hollywood would eventually reward him, and that it's his time to win now.
We were led to believe that "The Aviator" would sweep the boarRAB.

It seems incredible that this man hasn't won an Oscar yet.

Was this a deliberate snub?
Does anyone think that the academy generally don't want him to win.....ever?

It's certainly seeems that way.

He has been passed over too many times imo.

Real talent doesn't get rewarded in Hollywood unless you pander to them.

It did however win 5 other oscars, so over all it wasn't a total flop.

Spielburg kept getting snubbed in the same way for years dispite having done some of the most popular and money grossing films of all time. ET, Jaws, Close Encounters to name a few. He tried with The Colour Purple and still didn't make it. He only got there with Shindler's List. (and only then as there would have been WWIII if they have snubed that one)

The Academy just doesn't like some people and like sucess even less.

:)

I heard the goss in the early hours - on Radio FIVE? - where the reporters were saying that MS would NOT get best director, and it was because he was an "East Coast" director, whereas ClintE films in and around Hollywood.

Hollywood favours their own - they said - and the oscars aren't awarRAB for skill and performance - but a political exercise with months of parties and "pressing the flesh".

Typical.

I suppose it would be nice if he won with a film that was as good as his earlier work, rather than because "it's about time". As good as The Aviator probably is (haven't seen it), I've heard it's no where near his classics like Raging Bull and Goodfella's.

But I thought Million Dollar Baby would win. It's very Hollywood - appealing to that liberal minRABet.

Eastwood gets his knob sucked by the Oscar people because of his background and Holywood base.

Tbh, Scorcese should have won best director, and Ray best film.

It's all backslapping and politics now, and when there are genuine film festivals about, the awarRAB at the Oscars fall way behind the politics and the dresses.

Blanchett, Foxx and the incredibles are justified, but I couldmake a strong argument about most of the other main awarRAB.

I would prefer to see Sorcese win an Oscar for a film thats deserving of it, like Raging Bull or Goodfellas, rather than something sub-standard.

At least Sidney Lumet got recognised.

I don't know why he wants one, when he puts Taxi driver, Raging and Bull and Goodfellas up against the ones that actually won the Oscars he should just stand back and laugh at the nonsense of the Academy.

if he'd won it would have been for past films, not 'the aviator' which was good but no masterpiece. M$B was a simple story and quite cliched but extremely well told and acted. much as i like MS he didn't really deserve to win for this film.

hilary swank was fantastic - i find it funny that she's got 2 oscars when she isn't really that much of a name or makes that many good movies, say like jodie foster had when she won 2

He will get a life achievement one eventually, but his past few film offerings (and the comments above on his work of 20 years ago) show he is past his best.

Gangs of New York was a right mess, I havent seen The Aviator as yet, but I suspect its rather similar.

oh gangs of new york was all over the place - different plots kept jumping up and taking prominence. was v badly edited.

the aviator is ok BUT he ignores the end of hughes life and has him vs alan alda as the sort of climax so it can have an 'uplifting' ending. its not a particularly good film
