Down at the dojo I attend, I always seem to harm my sparring partner. Once I kicked a dude (name withheld) somewhere around the floating rib, trying my best not go full speed or full power. Consequently I hit him hard enough to cause him to hyperventilate, or so it seemed. In all actuality he forgot to exhale when he was struck and was holding his breath during the sparring session.
During a kumite session there's always one dude that I always seem to hurt no matter what I do. Once I got him in the clinch and lightly threw a knee into his stomach as slow as possible. I dropped him to the floor.
So I'm at a loss. No matter how softly or how slowly I punch or kick I always seem to hurt someone during a kumite or just light contact tournament style Tang Soo Do sparring (Hands and feet allowed) session.
Once I kicked my punching bag as hard as I could and I broke two chains off of it do to shock absorption. Man I wish I wasn't so strong leg wise! (I can lift 500 pounds with my legs) As for punches I'm weak as heck, (Can barely lift 160 bench press) but they still hurt like crazy.
What I was wanting to know is simply this: How do I strike or kick in such a way were I can maintain a sense of control without sacrificing too much speed and without hurting my sparring partner?
It seems no matter how slow I go I always seem to hurt someone during a light contact spar. My sensei says that once I learn control with my techniques then I'll have my chance to earn my next belt, a Brown Fourth Gup. The only problem is since I started going down to the academy, even as a purple belt (I started out as a purple because I transitioned from another martial arts studio and already knew most of the material up the Purple 9th Gup) I've always had a problem with control.
