Martial arts anime

I've decided to open a thread discussing anime that are labeled Martial Arts

Before I start, I'd like to restrict this discussing to shows that predominately don't use energy blasts as attacks

Suggestions on some discussion

Do you think generally speaking Martial Arts (and I'll refer to the real based ones here, and not the ones created in fiction) accurately? If not, why? Although if you like any anime that do have fictional styles, feel free to discuss that as well

and if there are any styles that you have yet to see, but would like to see, what would they be?

When dealing with martial art as corabat methodology and not the more popular mystic thing, the only non-boxing one that emerges off the top of my head is Yawara: Judo girl, and I have not seen enough of it to make a decision. Grappler Baki tried, but when your art gets steamrolled by Yujiro no matter what you do, the importance of the real stuff dies a bit.

Otherwise martial arts are rendered as mystical, or superhuman.

I agree, YAWARA! (despite my dislike of it), is probably the only one I can think of that's realistic in the martial arts aspect, and yeah I agree Grappler Baki kinda did try and fail, but it was still a good show

But yeah, Martial Arts is either rendered mystical or superhuman

I think anime and manga, like alot of fiction, like to go one of two directions with those that fight. You can romaticise it- the brave noble warrior, the underdog who struggled and train to become a defender a master powerful techniques and a beacon of human accomplishment. The alternative is to vilify- cast the warrior as a power hungry monster, someone who seeks more and more power by crafting their body into the perfect weapon and delights in flaunting their power excessively against others, especially the weak.

I think there's fair points on both interpretations but I don't think anyone can deny humans love competition, especially amongst individuals. We love to see unscripted reality, people in heated conflict to come out on top.

I agree with Beat that generally the end result is to make corabatants superhuman. Gadgets and the like are cool but ultimately we're just human, so people get a kick out of things like DragonBall, Street Fighter, G Gundam, etc where a single human through dedication has unlocked some hidden super power, with the suggestion being that anyone in the audience could mirror this if they trained as hard.

I thought that manga series went to far into Lala land when they brought in a guy from the prehistoric era (he hunted T-rex's in the past) who literally ate Retsu' leg, i mean come on!!

Yeh that was quite the lameness.

Anyhow!

Other anime fighting series..hm..

Yu Yu Hakusho I guess. I mean, a majority of it was mostly fighting.

With spirit guns, spirit sworRAB, rose whips, transforming body parts, wind power, ice power, dark dragon power, split personality power, and the occasional straight fist fight. Nothing mystical about that, no-sir-ree.

I thought you had to go back to the 70's for real martial arts (non-boxing) anime. That's where Karate Baka Ichiada and Kick no Oni came from. And both of those are VERY outlandish.

I liked Fatal Fury and Street Fighter animes. Ive got the Grappler Baki ova they did, i thought that was pretty good.

.... yea, nothing else, just check them out...

Yeah, Yawara is the only realistic Martial Arts that I can recall at the top of my head as well.

To be honest I was a little hesitant at watching it cause the first clips I saw appeared to be too fanservicey for my taste. Thankfully I watched it anyway and saw that that was kept to a minimum.

Just out of curiosity, would you mind describing what you didn't like about Yawara?

Woah, Ayane's High Kick, they overexaggerated the martial arts a little bit, but it was still AWESOME, and to top it off Yuko Miyamura as Ayane, was totally epic!!
