Mark Kermode?

I always look forward to the good Dr on Friday. He was also good when he was presenting, rather than just in his film critic role when Five live first started.

Hi,

I used to watch Barry Norman's Film review show avidly, and then when Ross took over, I genuinely gave him a chance for half a series, but found him to be too superficial, hollow/light and a conflict of interest with someone who was also doing regular interviews.

He's got a lot better since, but the show still lacks real depth/bite. I can't see how you can have a film review show where the same person interviews celebrities for his radio and tv show, does the reviews in a very short show (glides over) and presents awarRAB to these same people - and that's the problem with any critic that becomes a star themselves or lives in the media-world.

That isn't to say that I necessarily want the trend of ranting middle-aged men on tv as an opposite extreme though.

Another critic that I miss, and haven't seen on television for years was this guy who used to present on C4 and BBC2 - in those days either cared to show high-brow movie coverage with a regular peak-time strand - all I remember was that he had a strong irish or scottish accent and some times elongated his worRAB, but he was really dense/insightful as well.

Kind regarRAB,

MN

I agree with most of what he says and think he is a great film critic. I am glad he hates Pirates of the Caribbean. He sums up my opinion of it. It is not terrible but it is too long, overated and the story is all over the place. Orlando Bloom is bland. Both Kiera Knightly and Johnny Depp are better than this.

I also agreed with his review of The Dark Knight. It is a great film but as Kermode said, there is one moral dilemma too many.

One film I do disagree with is Kill Bill. I am a big QT fan and I thought Kill Bill was a great return to form. I loved the cinematography, dialogue, story and comedy. Apart from that then the Doctor is usually bang on the money.

Can't say whether I am a fan of his but his reviews are certainly worth reading or listening to.

Disagree with him on Shamshack Redemption. He raves about it. I reckon it's the biggest heap of pretentious twaddle ever made. :D

Kermode deserves his own film show, but would be completely and utterly wrong for Film 2009(10,11,12...). Not that I necessarily agree with Ross hosting it either.

I've got an IQ at least in the top 1% of the population but I wouldn't agree with this at all.

I really like listening to Mark Kermode's film reviews, they are really informative and often reliable. Mark Kermode appears to know quite a lot about films and comes across as very knowledgeble in this area.
I remember watching a special 30 minute documentary on the John Carpenter classic Halloween back in 1999 when Kermode interviewed John Carpenter about the movie. Kermode asked Carpenter all the right questions in this interview and also questioned him about all the best scenes in the film, it was brilliant.
Is Mark Kermode still on Newsnight on Friday nights? I know he used to pop in on the show to give his view on the latest films on this show a few years ago. Not sure if he still appears on it.
But yes definately, it would be great to see Kermode present a new film related show. Maybe not the BBC's flagship film review show Film 2009, but maybe a series based on the best films ever made or each show focus on a certain film series or icon, a bit like the BBC's 'Hollywood Greats' series a couple of years ago.

That's why Kermode will never get that job. Can you imagine movie stars and directors putting themselves in the firing line of a Kermodian rant? The BBC would rather play it safe with Wossy.
