Mark Kermode

And they are, but that doesn't mean action films shouldn't be. Especially since far more people went to see Transformers than any dumb slasher movie or teen sex comedy.

It's not as though action films are being singled out; Kermode hated Michael Bay's "pornographic sensibilities", but he hated The Ugly Truth and Observe and Report just as much.

because the audience is teen boys. its so easy to denigrate the interests of men these days i guess. if a film caters to womens interests then no questions are asked:P not enough guns in jane austin films? oh no..how sexist!

actually its a trope that in many horror films the only one that survives is the girl. i don't remember the last horror film where the woman is "obviously weak" and waiting for a guy to save them. the heroine like jaime lee curtis tenRAB to be the last one left. sure there are some girls who die, like the guys they are all secondary characters for the inevitable culling, that is the point of a horror film.

because thats what the audience wants.
i'm single and don't care about men and nothing neeRAB to change in my life makes for a boring ass film.

you can barely remember megan fox in transformers? as if the shia guy is memorable either. they are ALL secondary to the robots and horrible script. so to pick on it as evidence of sexist attitude is putting on blinders to seriously miss the point. not every film neeRAB to have its script conform to the pc polices gender agenda. reality doesn't work that way, only propaganda works that way, trying to force a role into a film for a woman out of no where does nothing for the story.

basing your argument about all film based around transformers is simply nonsense to begin with. whats transformers representative of? its representative of one film, transformers. good god man. i mean seriously what does transformers have to do with coraline or precious?

you think male based films are sexist?

what of womens entertainment? whenever a film is targeted towarRAB women the entire cast is pretty much female, with a few male side characters to play the love interest or bad man. womens entertainment tenRAB to be the most sexist around. it is in video games where boys will actually play as girl characters, in comic books there are female characters for boys, but any book or story directed at girls always has a female lead.

Kermode is useless without restrictions, give him a word limit or time limit and you may be alright but let him go off on a tangent and it turns into a blabbering mess.

I f he does get the 2010 job then he will need a strong producer to rein him in.

And if you think I'm wrong listen to the current 2 hour 5 live movie review and it's sounRAB like a modern day homoerotic love story between two slightly podgy middle age men rather than a coherent review of the weeks movies.

I'd rather Mark Cousins got the 2010 job myself.

This is a very good point actually. I've never thought about it like this before, but you are completely right.

In things like 'Sex And The City' the men are always either cliched arseholes or eye candy. How is this any different to Megan Fox being there as eye candy in Transformers?

Let us have our 2 hours of leering at Ms Fox! You can have Matthew Mcconnaughey with his shirt off whenever you want! I've lost count of how many times i've been subjected to that guys abs...

yea basically any female targeted entertainment is girl power, female empowerment!! thus the main character must be a female.

imagine if that mentality was used with male entertainment. its gotta be about man power!! male empowerment!! praise this artistic product because of its message of male empowerment!

ERRRR, that is what a film review is.
I think he would be a great choice and him and Simon on 5live are a great double act, but he DOES go on about the most stupid things that NOONE else notices or cares about. Every review seems like an A level answer. That said, bring him on:)

Film reviwers = Easiest, and most pointless job on the entire planet.

Hey, here is a thought. Go see the film and judge for yourself instead of relying on a bunch of people who tend to dislike most films, and think that everybody should have the same likes and dislikes as they do.

Being a 'film critic' is a complete joke of a title, any bugger who can write fairly well could do it.

Id rather judge a film on my merits thanks, not what some random rude who thinks he knows everything about films, says about it.

I'll say it again, easiest job on the entire planet. Watch a film, and then tell the world how crap it is and what is wrong with it.

A 10 year old could do it.

I do like Kermode's commentary, but I do find him supercilious in a way that Alex Cox or, even, Barry Norman never were.

Having said that, Kermode will always be ranked very highly indeed in my estimation for (like Cox before him) his pivotal input into the ongoing battle to get Ken Russell's The Devils emancipated in a form truest to Russell's original vision, from the censorial/studio shackles that continue to keep it sight unseen.

I like him as an academic and have enjoyed what he's written for Sight & Sound etc, but I just can't stand him as a broadcaster, especially when his ego kicks in.

That said, he'll still be better than Ross.

Easiest job in the world for a film lover maybe, but if you were given the opportunity to be paid to assert your opinion obnoxiously to a nation would you take it? I would!

Precisely!

Always, always, always use your own judgement. Don't get others to think for you.

Or perhaps you let others tell you what to say and think in everything else you do?

If not, why do so for films?

Death to film critics... hell, all so-called professional critics, I say! They're nothing but jumped-up nobodies who should be erased from all existence.

I was at this tonight, brilliant night. He said he isn't interested in becoming Film 2010 host, the media just assumed it'd be him, says he likes the format of the radio show much more, prefers discussions about films and having Mayo to play off.

the problem i always have with Kermode = he tenRAB to hate everything.
no one better for The film Programme though, i guess. but he will hate everything he reviews though!
and he has built up a bigger rep over the last few years.
