Mariners and White Sox Game - One hop homer?

I just happened to come across a story about Ken Griffey's walk off home run against Chicago. It was a deep hit to right field that hit the ground and bounced off the wall. Apparently it was considered a home run. I'm not 100% familiar with baseball rules nor am I a huge fan, but I always thought a home run would have to go over the fence? Do the rules in overtime play become more lax to get the game done with? What's the deal?
