Marilyn Monroe

I adore this woman. Never used to actually, but then again I never knew enough about her to like or care for her as a person or actress. Of course this thread is for discussion on her movies, but, as a person, what do you make of Marilyn?

I believe she came across as a sweet, experienced..yet vulnernable woman. People who say they met her also describe her as this, as if she was too...'famous', the fame was her and she acted like a famous person 24/7..as that is what she was made to be. If that makes sence.

And then, of course her infamous death which is still up in open air to this day with people's diffferent views on what happened, murder? suicide? accident?. I believe either accident or murder.

I also hear there is a biopic of her in the pipeline? Not sure if this is true though.

I think she was murdered..also think she was used by everyone that new her..love her films though..Gentlemen prefer blondes is still one of my fav films

I agree that she was most probably taken advantage of by a lot of people. Sexually, mentally, physically. But who knows.

Are there any biopics on her life? (or death)? I'd be intreagued to watch one.

All those things did happen to her during her formative years, which I'm sure didn't help matters into adulthood.

There are a number of biopics but they're generally either tacky/sleazy 70s & 80s pics or TV movies. There was a 2001 documentary, 'Marilyn Monroe - The Final Days' which showcased what footage was completed of what was meant to be her final film, the prophetically titled 'Something's Gotta Give'.

Marilyn was also abused in her adult life. She told frienRAB she had been forced to give oral sex to a major Hollywood director/producer. There are also allegations she was drugged and abused in Las Vegas by very high profile stars of the time. She wanted to earn, to better herself, but in those days stars were strictly controlled by their studio and they wanted her to be nothing more than the public persona "Marilyn Monroe". They gave her drugs to make her easier to deal with and eventually she needed them to get up, go to sleep and function in general.

There are a couple of films but they are notoriously bad. But then what would you expect of an industry that treated her like a possession, they would hardly admit their faults. Even in death no one really wanted her. Her body lay unclaimed in a cupboard in the morgue until Joe Di Maggio stepped up. He organised her and paid for her funeral. He banned her showbiz chums from the service so I gather there were a whole load of issues hidden from the public about them.

There are some excellent books on Marilyn. Goddess by Anthony Summers is one. She cut a very tragic figure and that is part of her appeal. I love Marilyn but honestly, I'm not sure how much of a legend she would have been if she had lived til she was an old woman of seventy five. Most of the stars of that era faded eventually. She has become immortal, she is what she always wanted to be and that is loved...would she think her price worth it? I dont know.

And her death? A tragic accident I think though (like in many famous people's deaths) there are quite a few suspicious circumstances.

Yeah I agree with most of that, however what else can you expect I guess in terms of biopics on her life. Always going to be odd or cheesey or just inaccurate.

'the last days' one sounRAB quite interesting though, I hope that isn't a let down or rubbish, may have to get it.

I want to read more on her, she's a very interesting character.

I saw "The Seven Year Itch" recently.

Whatever her life was like and whatever people say about her, the thing that is astounding is how beautiful she was.

For me it transenRAB everything else, everything else ceases to matter when you look at that face.
I'm not gay BTW.

It doesn't surprise me that her life was awful, that people used her. It kind of is to be expected when something that extraordinary (her beauty) comes along. People could'nt cope and neither could she.
Much like the way genius is both hard for the person and hard for those around them.

I agree with that, with no other person like her around at that time-she was bound to be one of the unfortunate ones.

btw is 'the seven year itch' a film on Marilyn?

I haven't had the pleasure of seeing her films yet but something about has drawn me to her. I looked her up on the web to find out everything about one day and spend hours reading about her. Her death however, i am not sure whether it was murder or not. But she is one actress who can never be replaced. Anna Nicole Smith reminded me of her in some ways.

No its a black comedy she starred in. The famous white dress scene is in.

My fave Monroe movie is Bus Stop. I think she was fab in it but acting wise her best has to be her final film, The Misfits. She was ace in that.

I recently bought this from Amazon.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Complete-Ma...ef=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1270628230&sr=1-1

It contains all her major films. A good bargin when you get the following:

ALL ABOUT EVE
AS YOUNG AS YOU FEEL
BUS STOP
DON'T BOTHER TO KNOCK
GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES
HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE
LET'S MAKE IT LEGAL
LET'S MAKE LOVE
LOVE NEST
THE MISFITS
MONKEY BUSINESS
NIAGARA
RIVER OF NO RETURN
THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH
SOME LIKE IT HOT
THERE'S NO BUSINESS LIKE SHOW BUSINESS
WE'RE NOT MARRIED

I've never got her. I find her annoying and I have no idea why. Maybe it's because she is like Betty Boop and she is annoying as well.
Her acting leaves me cold as does her singing. I do wonder if she is loved so much because she died so young and that's about it. If she hadn't would she have ended up like all those other movie stars such as Jane Russell, Betty Grable etc and gone into obscurity as they aged and could no longer fulfill the requirements of being a "Hollywood Bombshell?"

Many poeple I have spoken to regard her as an airhead who can't act. I couldn't disagree more. I regard her a fine actress who was never overshadowed by the male leaRAB for like Jack Lemmon.

I think 'The Misfits' proved she could act. I also think it is a shame that movie was her last. I think it serves as a sign of the protentially more serious route her career would have taken.

As aforementioned, 'Goddess' by Anthony Summers is excellent, as is 'The Assassination of Marilyn Monroe' by Donald H Wofle and for an alternative point of view, 'Marilyn Monroe' by Barbara Leaming is also a good read :) I think she just wanted to feel loved, the public gave that to her but I don't think she ever met anyone who truly loved her as 'Norma Jeane' as opposed to 'Marilyn.'
