Manual Or Intellect Work, Which One Does People Endure More?

During this recession I wonder how the jobs of older and experienced workers fair in the field of manual vs. intellect. For example, say a company needed to cut costs and they decided to do so via layoffs. I wonder in a construction company (extreme manual labor) as such, would they hire/keep an older and experienced worker, or hire a less experience, more vigor worker?

What about the field of intellect too? Business management, IT, finance, etc are fields that require more intellect rather than manual labor. In this case would they hire/keep an older and experienced worker, or hire a less experienced, younger, more vigor worker?

Basically the question is where would you last longer career-wise: manual labor or intellect? I hope I'm not offending anyone, It's interesting to see the kind of factors of age, experience, energy, etc play into business decisions such as this one.
When I said "intellectual" I mean like it requires more of a knowledge base (i.e. AD 2008, environment planning, accounts receivable, etc.) rather than a physical skill set.
Also sorry I posted this here. I know this isn't the best place for this topic, but the suggested ones suck. In addition, people don't really visit the career forums either.
