I have never realized that women can be THAT manly. Yep, tomboys abound. Who is to most manly(or, at least, tomboyish) female you know in fiction? Ashley Spindelli from Recess sometimes prays she was a dude. Kagura from Gintamta was the first manga character to barf on-screen. Not a cartoon nor anime, but I heard that Kumatora from MOTHER 3 for Game Boy Advance was extremely manly. Then, there's Revy from Black Lagoon...
 
How about Izumi Curtis from FMA? Actually she's sort of an odd case, seeing as how she's actually kinda feminine, sometimes....when she's not kicking your ass.
 
Half of the internet knows about girly men in fiction thanks to yaoi and bishounen. It's because of those traits we hardly see any "TRUE" MEN in Japanese ficction, or any muscles.
 
I'm going to guess that you've never heard of the Magypsies? Though, that may be the other way around...

As for Manly Women, I guess you could count Alice from Superjail!. Again, may be the other way around...
 
Awesome topic,similar to the tomboys in animation thread that I love awhile back,but I know alot of manly women in animation that're my favorites:

Possum Pearl/huge hillbilly woman(Popeye) - Huge,strong,scary macho manly chicks that were a great challenge in Olive's rogues gallery & perfect girlfriends for Bluto,hahahaha:p:D.

Francine(Arthur) - Typical tomboyish monkey girl who's a bit bratty,loud,& funny and still a friend for Arthur.

Ashley Spinelli(Recess) - The perfect manly tomboy who loves to pick fights whenever she's pissed off,she's hilarious especially being brainwashed with the Ashleys by Randal,hahahaha:p.

Gator Jane(Animated Ace Ventura:Pet Detective) - Awesome alligator killing tough tomoyish,alligator skin wearing,manly poacher chick,she ROX.

Big Susan/Stompa(Superman:TAS/Batman:The Brave & the Bold) - Lizzie's partner-in-crime who's an awesome big strong manly tomboyish woman & big strong, tough chick who's one of Darkseid's Female Furies who're another great examples of manly women in animation,hahahahahahaha:p!!!!!!

Lor(The Weekenders) - My favorite female character who's the best manly tomboy who loves guys' sports,likes to be tough,& has a whole lot of brothers:eek::p.

The Monster Hunter(TMNT 2003) - A huge macho,manly tomboy who's an expert monster hunter who's not a threat like Baxter,The Shredder,The Triceratons,& Agent Bishop though,more of an annoyance to the ninja turtles & Casey.

Nikki(6teen) - My next favorite tomboy character who's Asian,likes to be tough/scary,has a love/hate relationship with Jonesy,embarrassed by her cool parents,& likes to tease the poor Clone Girls while hating her crappy job at the Khaki Barn:p.

Warmonga(Kim Possible) - One large,manly tomboyish alien conqueror who's a pretty strong fighter who beats Shego & her fight with Kim & Ron was awesome too,sad that she died with Warhok though by the amazing Ron Stoppable.

Rampage(Justice League Unlimited) - Supervillainess of Gorilla Grodd's Legion who's an awesome ugly,scary,macho, tomboyish manly chick who's really tough/strong:D.

Rosemary(Chowder) - Big female,tough,manly,tomboyish bully chicken customer who's hilarious bashing poor Gazpacho,Chowder,& Schnitzel.

Cammie/big scary manly woman(The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack) - Two big scary,ugly manly women from the episodes,Cammie Island & Something's A Miss,which I hope Cammie the ugly female giant comes back,she's a great character.

Eva(Total Drama Island/Action/World Tour) - She's one tough,manly tomboyish jerk who's got serious anger issues,can be a BEAST,& is more scarier/psychotic than the jerk Heather:D,both her & Lashawna would of had a catfight,darn it.

Virginia(The Venture Brothers) - The female version of Brock who's one scary,macho,creepy,manly tomboy who's a perfect great opponent for Brock,hope to see more of her fight with Brock though:D.

Veronica(Back at the Barnyard) - Abby's evil tough,tomboyish cousin who's clever/manipulative/awesome,hehehe.

Alice(Superjail!) - Scary tough,tomboyish,manly female cop who knows how to be a killing machine,hahahahahaha.

Sweets the Suzie Scout Master(The League of Super Evil) - The perfect example of a tomboyish manly woman which she looks like a freaky female Justice Gene clone who's the leader of the evil Suzie Scouts,hahahahahahahaha.

Mongal(Superman/Batman:The Brave & The Bold) - Mongul Jr.'s huge alien sister who's his second-in-command who's also another example of a tough,tomboyish manly woman who's a tough fighter & is voiced by Gary Anthony Williams who also did Uncle Ruckus,Coroner Rick,Toyman/Fun Haus,Mongul Jr.,& Ray Johnson from Stroker & Hoop/The Boondocks/The Goode Family.

The "Animals Or Else" tomboy punks(The Goode Family) - They're tough,manly,tomboyish,& scary and they're awesome as well on the whole protecting animals business.

Fin(Stoked) - The ultimate surfer girl & total tomboy who's a tough/manly who wants to be the new surf instructor,but got stuck as a hideous maid,& has a love/hate relationship with Reef with his sexism rants like Nikki/Jonesy's & Duncan/Courtney's from 6teen/Total Drama Island/Action,hahahahahaha,what an awesome new Canadian series.

Tara(The Amazing Spiez!) - Awesome tough/manly black athlete girl who's Lee's great new major rival & possible girlfriend for him,hahahahaha:p:D.

Zoey/Angie(Pokemon Diamond/Pearl) - Both of those two are perfect manly tomboys on how they wear which Zoey's contest costumes were awesome which they were great rivals for Ash & Dawn.

Benten/Ryuunosuke(Urusei Yatsura) - Both of those two are my most favorite manly tomboys which Benten is one of Lum's best friends who's a tough alien biker chick who loves fighting & kicking Ran & Spice Girls' butts too:p,& Ryuunosuke is awesome & a great example of a macho,manly tomboy who was raised by her crazy,twisted,wackjob father to become more like a man,but she wants to be a normal girl on knowing how to be feminine & doesn't know how,but she always fights with her crazy father lots of times:Dwhich she loves violence/fighting can master any type of fighting style & tough opponents like Benten,Kotetsu-neko,Shingo,& her crossdressing fiancee Nagisa can match her in a tough fight.Her rivalry friendships with Benten truely amaze me & most girls,even Ran & Kurama think she's guy which was hilarious,& I feel sorry for her that her mother Masako died with her crazy father calling out her name alot,hahahahaha,I've always enjoyed Ryuunosuke episodes as much as I love this awesome wacky,zany anime:p,which Luffy's Japanese voice actor did her justice,& it sucks that she was a background character in the movies though.

The Girl Ranma/Ukyo(Ranma 1/2) - The best manly tomboyish girls who're awesome martial artists which their cool martial arts techniques,especially Ukyo's cooking skilled martial arts techniques are so awesome:D.

Kanna/Maria(Sakura Wars/Taisen) - Both of them were great manly tomboys which Kanna loves fighting & bickering with the jerk Sumire,& Maria's manliness impressed me with her cool marksmen skills & playing manly Prince roles in the cute Cinderella play episode:anime:.

A-ko/Liza(Project A-ko) - A-ko may look feminine,but she's pretty manly,tomboyish,& has superhuman strength(because of those wristbands)to top it off,& Liza is one tough,manly,tomboyish bad chick who's one strong fighter which her fight with A-ko was AWESOME:D!!!!!

Taniya(Yu-Gi-Oh! GX) - Awesome tough manly tomboyish Amazon chick of Kagemaru's Shadow Riders group who's a great duelist & loves Bastion,hehehe.

Haruko(Fooly Cooly) - She's pretty manly & tomboyish,but she's hilarious,crazy,& wacky while swinging guitars fighting against giant robots & hurting Naota as well which that anime was awesome/wacky:anime:.

Jo(Bakuretsu Tenshi/Burst Angel) - Awesome,kickbutt Angel chick who's pretty manly when it comes to fighting & protecting poor Meg which their friendship was so adorable before when Meg took her place at the end:anime:.

Gascogne(Vandread/Second Stage) - Awesome tough,manly tomboyish space chick who's my most favorite of the space chicks of Vandread/Second Stage!!!!!

Motoko(Ghost in the Shell:SAC) - Awesome,kickbutt,tough,manly cyborg chick who's the Major of Section 9 who's the best crimefighter ever & Mary Elizabeth McGlynn did her character justice:anime:.

Maki(Air Master) - Awesome,tall,manly tomboy who's my favorite tough anime heroine who's an ex-gymnast turned streetfighter who loves fighting & has great aerial combat moves as well,that fighting anime was so awesome:D.

Amaru(Naruto Shippuden Movie 2:Bonds) - Awesome redhaired tomboyish doctor with awesome medical skills for healing injured wounds & has a crush on Naruto:p.

Tatsuki/Yoruichi/Apache(Bleach) - Both of those two are awesome tough,manly tomboys with Tatsuki protecting Orihime while beating up on Chizuru,even knowing karate while sparring with Ichigo during childhood & Yoruichi is kickbutt/awesome who's a great strong fighter which her fight with Soi Fon was awesome & Wendee Lee voiced them both which was awesome & Apache, Halibel's tomboyish chick Fraccion is awesome/powerful/hilarious:D.

Yunbo(Fighting Beauty Wulong) - The first HUGE,scary,macho,manly tomboy that I saw who's one of the tough female wrestlers & especially gave poor Maolan a beating which really frightened me:eek:which huge manly tomboys are really powerful female characters:D.

Shiho/Aoi(To Heart/Remember My Memories) - The best tough tomboyish girls which I love Aoi the most because of her great fighting style & her love for fighting is great & yet she's young though:p.
 
Maybe I said that wrong, but I hardly see any prideful buff bods in Japanese fiction. On the same vein, girly men would really be those who like doing girl things.
 
Dr. Girlfriend. *shudders* Her and Hitler Girl, from Venture Brothers. But then, that's a parody show, so it shouldn't be taken too seriously...

From a show that took itself seriously: Rita Torres from ExoSquad. Just a stereotypical angry seargeant. Just a female one.
 
Tania from Yu-Gi-Oh GX, which offers some humorous situations when she and Bastion interact (in the few moments when the writers remember he's actually a character on the show that is)
 
Four words: Major Alex Louis Armstrong, he has a buff body and he's definitely proud of it.

By the way, his older sister from the manga would definitely qualify for this thread. Granted, she isn't animated, but considering that the new "Fullmetal Alchemist" anim? is more closely based on the manga, I guess she'll turn up sooner or later.

Hmm, perhaps I should put the last piece behind spoilers? Nah, It's not like it offers any huge revelations regarding the storyline or anything.
 
I'd just like to point out here that being a tomboy doesn't necessarily equate to being "manly". Some female characters such as Arthur's Francine Frensky, Recess' Ashley Spinelli and Buttercup from Powerpuff Girls may be tough and scrappy, but I don't think that any of them ever secretly yearned to be male. Both Buttercup and Spinelli have been singled out in certain episodes for having crushes on boys, which is very much the opposite of manly.

By "manly", I thought that this thread was referring to sexually confused characters such as Patty Bouvier from The Simpsons (who was actually outed as being a lesbian, if I'm not mistaken) or Alice from Superjail!.
