I am researching on the topic of going green...Give me your opinions,in terms of modern society...Whether we should adapt to the natural environment and not change it.

Note:This is an open ended question and all answers would be greatly appreciated! So just speak your mind!Thanks..

Every life form changes its environment. This is a fact. Trees, grass, animals and people. The degree of the change can influence the success of the species. Typically some change is beneficial. Tree and grasses cycle nutrients they require and make it easier for the seeds to survive. Beavers build dams that favor propagation. If the environment changes to much, it can cause problems. A monoculture can form and insects of disease wipe out plants. Food can become scare and the beavers have to move. Deer will over-browse and some starve rather than move.

Every species adapts to its environment within limits. Deer may learn to graze road sides and avoid traffic. Trees can form hybrids that can better adapt to changing soil conditions. Humans are by far the most adaptable. We change our agricultural practices for example (no-till farming). We have visited every continent on earth we could find and even go to the ocean bottom or moon for short periods of time. We can even genetically modify our food to match growing conditions. Our technology helps us adapt.

Our technology not only helps us adapt, but it helps us modify our environment. We modify by irrigating and genetically modifying our crops (breeding and direct genetic manipulation). We can level mountains to build, plant forest of tree species we need, clean the water we use, etc.

There is always a balance between adaptation and changing our environment. Problems occur when a species causes changes to occur they cannot adapt to quick enough, or they do not recognize as dangerous and modify their behavior.

Yes I agree...if anything we should invest money into how to maintain the environment, which is very different then the Cap and Tax bill....

At least in America...we have had a problem with maintaining the environment with Yellow Stone national park.... because it wanted to be a preservation....we banned the native americans from hunting and burning the forest down...

Then the elk population exploded, because of encouraged efforts...Then the animals began to die..so park rangers killed off all of the predators...then..it was realized what the problem was.....There was no grass...because the elk population was not regulated..they overgrazed the area.

The overgrazing made animals die from starvation..and when the rangers took the wolves and the native americans out of the equation it would get worse because none of the animals would die prematurely, leaving every elk to eat the maximum amount of grass...

Then in 1988 a horrible fire broke out that burned 1/3 of Yellow Stone....The reason was a lightning strike that hit some dry wood...That dry wood would not have caused the forest to burn down if the native americans were allowed to burn the forest from time to time as maintenance.

So in the past...we have tried to dictate what should happen...but we didn't have a clue, and we essentially screwed up the egosystem of yellowstone. I feel we should adapt and learn how to maintain a healthy environment.

One should strive to meet one's potential.

Man has the ability to shape his environment for the better, for the convenience of his children, and he should.
