Mamma Mia

Am I the only one who thinks this film is rubbish? I haven't seen the musical, it's probably a lot better in the theatre, but have just watched the DVD while ironing (such an exciting life!) for the second time and it confirmed my original fears, that it is, indeed, bloody awful!

I would have to agree, for me it was one of the worst films I've ever seen. I got bored after about 20 minutes and just skipped to all the songs which weren't much better.

It was pleasant and silly enough to be enjoyable, but on a technical level was absolutely dire (the director was the director of the play and iirc had never directed a film before).

haha!

Every woman in the cosmos appears to like this movie but I couldnt stand it, and I dont think I could bear seeing it a second time. Its cheesy beyond belief, has awful singing in it, has NO plot, and involves lots of women shrieking every 5 minutes.....

I remember posting on RAB after that I was surprised that Waterloo didnt feature. Posters replied that it was on during the end credits....

Guess what??

Id beaten it outta the exit the second the credits started!
:D:D:D

Stand out awful moment for me had to be Julie Walters starting to sing Chiquitita (sp?) through the toilet door! (I am a woman, by the way, so that's one less in the cosmos!)

If they'd set a movie like that to The Beatles people would have complained it was sacrilege. But by the mid 1980s Abba's credibility was lower than a Thai bride's and you could do what you liked with it.

It's one of those films that I kow I will never see.

A friend said it was quite fun sat in a large group that, along with some if the rest of the cinema, 'sang along to the songs.

They saw it in a 'quiet' cinema soon after and said it was awful.

You cannot deny that they created some of the best pop songs of all time though.

I for one adore this movie. Does every film have to be a Citizen Kane type masterpiece? Can some not be enjoyable, light-hearted fare?!

I like it. It's just a bit of light hearted fun. Although I cringe at Colin Firth's relationship with the island boy. Seemed so awkward

Confession time...

When I first saw Mamma Mia it was purely at the insistance of 'er indoors.
Got to admit after it was over I thought : 'Well, there's 2 hours I'll never get back'!

But it's been on Sky Movies pretty well constantly and it's goddamn chirpy fluffiness has won me over!
It's not great art. It's not even a great musical! But it has got great tunes and the infectious enthusiasm of the cast wins through in spite of their musical deficiencies.

Which gives me an idea for a thread...

Stand by for 'Guilty Pleasures' !:D

Funny but that's been exactly my experience (except being taken by 'er indoors).

First time I saw it (only because a dvd came our way and daughter wanted to see it) I sat there with my jaw dropping open at the utter awfulness of it.

But since then, seen it on Sky, kind of "in passing" way, and it's become very enjoyable.

Isn't it strange how films can creep up on you like that?
Everything bad, people say about the film, I have to agree with. Yet it's great fun to watch.

I think it's an bloody awful film but I still really like it.
It is what it is and doesn't pretend to be anything else. I look at the hate towarRAB the film and just laugh because they just don't get it.
