Mama Mia: Blue Ray or DVD?

My Mrs wants this for Christmas and I've been trying to convince her that the Blue Ray version will be better for sound and picture. However.....I have read one review that the picture quality wasn't that much better than the DVD (over saturated...) and.....this would be the clincher for her....the BR doesn't have the sing along? Help please my happy christmas depenRAB on it.... :D

No the Blu Ray does not have the singalong option. I really dont know why as this is top notch technology. There is an option to view details of each song as it appears. I know you only have to select subtitles to make a singalong version but it seems odd they do this for dvd but not for the blu ray.

If you don't have a surround sound system then I don't believe the better sound on the blu ray will make much of a difference...

Just go for the DVD, some lovely editions out. DVD for me anyway, not bothered about blu ray right now.

Be careful, you will have silly people coming on here and saying you have bad eyesight because you can't tell the amazing difference between the two formats... I remember mentioning something when one complete moron went off on one... ha ha.

Thanks for the comments to date. I have a number of Blue Ray discs and am certainly sold on the format, if used to it's maximum potential. Eg Blade Runner scrubs up really well and Zulu is absolutely astounding. However I accept that a poor transfer negates all the advanages of the format. Hence the comment about the picture quality. However as the BR doesn't offer the sing along that about settles it. After all, it's the Mrs movie..... :D

From what I have seen of Blu Ray, I can barely tell the difference between Blu Ray and a normal DVD either, and I watched it on a suitable telly and everything.

The Blu Ray DVRAB are priced ridiculously, so I won't be rushing out to get a Blu Ray machine any time soon, I can tell you.

You need to view on at least a 32" screen to see the improvement easily.

To be honest if you cannot tell the difference between standard def and high def then you DO need your eyes testing.

You only have to switch between the SD and HD versions of BBC,C4 and other channels to see the improved clarity.

One wonders why Sky HD is selling faster than they can supply it if it wasnt any good- and Sky HD is not as good as Bluray.

I agree though that

I have a 32 inch screen, and I've watched blu ray on bigger screens compared to my television. I know the quality of it and it's nothing to do with my eyes thank you, Dennisspooner... :p

This isn't meant to be a dig but the quality is there even if you can't resolve it. There is also the audio difference: uncompressed PCM is a noticable improvement even on DTS.

I am really surprised that there are comments on here about not being able to see the difference. Whenever i watch a blu-ray i can instantly see the difference and i am slightly long sighted!

I could instantly tell you whether i was watching a blue ray or not. The level of detail is a lot higher and fast action is nowhere near as pixellated as DVD.

Once the prices start slipping and they make full use of the capacity it will be so much better (remember both CRAB and DVRAB started off at vastly inflated prices).

It's cool, obviously there is a difference and would be silly to say there is NO difference but to me it's not a vast difference that makes it so important for me to rush out and change.

If you cant see it then its your problem.

Many other people can and thats why millions of Bluray discs are selling and why Sky HD is growing faster than Sky+ ever did.

SO dont think just because you cant see it that everyone else is wrong:rolleyes:

Now whether you think the improvement is worth paying the extra for is certainly open to debate- but the quality jump is not - its a fact

I gather you are assuming I am someone called Dennispooner .

Thats one of the things that tickles me about some people - they think so highly of their own opinion that there cant possible be more than one person who disagrees with them:rolleyes:

Prices are coming down all the time.

If you shop around you can get new releases for circa 15 quid.

Mind you Mamma Mia! would be overpriced if they gave it away free in the Sunday papers. ;)
