malfunction indicator lamp is on on my 1997 Honda Civic what could the problem be?

I've been reading around on the net and saw a lot of people saying it could be due to low oil levels, so I went and put oil in my car and the light is still on. I just read on another yahoo post about this and the guy mentioned that it could be a light that's out. I went and checked my break lights and sure enough one of them is out, but is this actually a problem that could cause the malfunction indicator lame to come on? please help if you have any knowledge of this.
 
If the malfunction lamp is on, there is a problem - there is a malfunction. An "out" brake-light is a malfunction, and can have serious consequences. If the problem area is not indicated or obvious, then take the car to an authorized service centre.
