ok, so first i know how much space he needs, not to put him with other males or territorial fish, etc. etc. but anyone know any other fish i could put with him that stays under 2 inches or so? and that doesn't need a lot? much thanks
i have a gallon tank but buying a bigger one in the next few days

Once you buy a ten gallon then you can add more fish. I know its hard, but if you get anything smaller they will all die): I keep my male betta in a tank with cory catfish. Look up julie, albino, peppered, spotted, panda corys all thoose ae perfect and you don't even need to take extra percautions(:

yes, harliquen rosboaras are good to keep with bettas. i suggest maybe a school (5 or more) of neon tetras or cardinal teras? they're really beautiful. also plecos AKA algae eaters, are alright. they eat lots of algae in your tank so they save you time as well. just remember that they do get pretty big, but they grow really slow.

i also used to keep a khuli loach with my betta. they look like striped worms, but they're actually fish, and they're really funny to watch. just rember, don't get a bigger meat-eating fish because it will almost certainly mistakin it for a nice, juicy peice of food.

Please provide a specific tank size so that appropriate recommendations can be made.

I keep one of mine in a ten gallon tank with a school of harlequin rasboras.

~Upgrade to at least a ten gallon aquarium and cycle it prior to adding fish. With a ten gallon aquarium that gives you the option of tankmates. I would do a school of smaller fish such as the rasboras or some neon tetras, and maybe a few African dwarf frogs.
