make subwoofers work with indash?

i have an indash in my car and i have 15" subs hooked up to it witha 750 watt amp. when music is playing the subs work fine but if i play a dvd the subs dont do anything. does anyone know how to make the subs work while playing a movie so it will be like surround sound? i went to settings but it didn't have any settings about this?
 
it depends on your radio (model), most radios don't support the dolby digital surround sound so the audio is only sent to four channels
