in the military, you are asked to uphold the constitution (I agree with this) and to follow the orders of the president (I don't agree with this). Although it makes sense to follow your senior officers for practical purposes and such, otherwise no one would have anything to do, plus you are usually in arms length of your senior officer, a president is different.
Let's say, hypothetically, and I know this is hard to imagine, but let's say a commie, or a terrorist, or whatever happens to plan a coup on America and succeeds, hypothetically, that means you have to serve your president, who was your enemy, and is now your leader.
Don't you find that the least bit dangerous?
One minute you are fighting al qaeda, the next minute, by some strange luck and tactic, they are now your president. I'm not implying that our current president is al qaeda, I'm just saying hypothetically, if you HAVE to follow the president's orders, the president could be satan himself and you'd have to follow those orders. At what point do you retain your conscience and fight for your country? (even if that means being a "traitor" to your conquered country, in other words, a true patriot).
fang: I wish it were that simple, however whoever is in power usually decides what is "constitutional" or not
