Main Characters That Aren't Important To The Show

I pointed out in an Episode Review of the Boondocks that Huey Freeman, the star of the actual comics and the prinicpal lead seen in the first part of the opening, dosen't really seem to be too important to the show. This is espiecally apparent in season two with how few plots are based around him (the irony is I think the only episode that had a central plot specifically about him, The B.E.T hunger Strike episode, never even aired on TV) and now with an episode he wasn't even in.

Then Silverstar came on and pointed out that the title character of Lucy, from Lucy Daughter Of The Devil, has that role, since despite being in every ep, she has little to do with even the focus of every episode. Which got me to thinking:

Just what shows out there have characters that are suppose to be the main leads or stars of the show that just aren't important? That wind up easily being out preformed or out noticed by side characters, and spend a majority of the time not even getting any focus on the show? Because there are some shows that do this quite a bit and I think it's an interesting topic for discussion: Just why do you not care about showing material involving the main lead, and why are other people getting the focus?

Well, although Phineas and Ferb are the main characters, they're kind of second bananas when it comes to Candace and even Perry. Actually, their little foreign friend Bowelcheek gets more episodes centered around him as far as I can tell.

Well, even though he's kind of important, it would be a much better show if Johnny Test wasn't in it. He is the main reason I always change the channel when it's on.

In many episodes for Transformers G1, the Autobots and Decepticons barely play too much of a role (Child's Play comes to mind instantly, but there have been others) and sometimes they just seem tacked on the episode's plot.

Kenny in South Park could fit in this category. Since he was back in the show after his "permanent" death, he seems to be overshawdowed by secondairy characters like Butters.

I heard that some people would find Inspector Gadget more enjoyable without its titular protagonist.

You know, would Inuyasha be any different without its titular character?

If we're including comic strips, then I'd have to mention Miss Peach from Mell Lazarus' comic strip of the same name. Although Miss Peach was the title character, she would typically be absent from the strip for weeks at a time, and I don't believe that she ever once once delivered a single punch line.

Seconded. I would love it if Johnny Test's producers did an episode where Johnny was given the Huey Freeman treatment, i.e., he'd only have a very small part or be altogether missing. Even if they only did this once, it would make my day.

Ichigo Kurosaki of Bleach, simply because there are so many episodes in which he is not in and focused on the Soul Society characters.

Business Guy, Big Man on Hippocampus, Extra Large Medium, Peter-assment, April in Quahog and The Splendid Source all aired in the past 6 months. And they all either star Peter or heavily feature him. So while I agree that Brian and Stewie do get a lot of attention, Peter is far from uderutilized.

:^:Thank you, DarthGonzo. Peter Griffin may not be the focus of every single episode, but he still gets episodes and scenes. Therefore, Peter has hardly become unimportant to his show.

Bart, in the later seasons of The Simpson. Homer is the shows main character and main comic relief at the same time, Marge is the character who Homer has to answer to whenever he gets in trouble, Lisa is "the smart one" who gets to deliver the "correct" opinions on all kinds of issues, and Bart is... useless, pretty much. Sometimes a sidekick/straight man to Homer.

Then of course there is maggie, but she has been insignificant since day one...

While they may not get a lot of episodes focused mainly on them, both Phineas and Ferb are still important characters. Most of the attention that Candace gets is from trying to expose their summer fun plans to their mom and half of the plot in every segment does center around Phineas and Ferb trying to complete their newest summer goal. I think that they get a pretty good amount of focus too, so I don't really see how they aren't important to the show.

Any main character that is female in Yu-Gi-Oh! Tea did almost nothing, Alexis (and most other characters) didn't get as much screen time in Seasons 2 and 3 (never saw season 4) of GX, and now someone said that Akiza's not doing a whole lot in Season 2 of 5D's . They turn them from important to fanservice. (I was really thinking Akiza would change it.)
