Magical girls

No need for the tag, I knew that. Plus, my post was based off of the comic version.

*ahem*
-The girls were planning on running away to Metamoor but, they had other plans and had to create their astrals to replace them. Will's drop winRAB up being a total blank (a literal blank, funny enough) so in response, Will goes into the cave, sits and pouts. Corny has to convince her to come out.

-She's moped about Matt quite a few times.

-I distinctly remeraber one chapter (think I actually have a copy stuck somewhere) where Will and her mom get into a fight over the former not being home for the latter's birthday (she had some concert thing to go to with her frienRAB). Will gets pissed, slams the door and pouts in the park with her mouse thing. (IIRC, same chapter she found the black rose things...)
 
Let's see, do I like magical girl? Well on my shelf there is Full Moon, I.O.N, Fushigi Yugi, Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne, Time Stranger Kyoko, all the Ghibli offerings, Vampire Miyu, and Girl Who Leapt Through Time. I guess that's a yes.

I like magical girl. Sailor Moon was most likely my first anime (that or Tenchi), so I have a fondness for the genre. I used to pretend to be a sailor scout.
 
I love magical girl series. The real magical girls series anyway. Back when they weren't all fighting evil by moonlight. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Cutie Honey and Sailor Moon. But I hate that everyone thinks a magical girl HAS to fight evil. Cutie Honey was the first to do this, unfortunately after her, every magical girl series needed villians and nude transformations.

Mahotsukai Sally, Mahou no Mako-chan, Sarutobi Ecchan, Mahotsukai Chappy, Miracle Shoujo Limit-chan, Majokko Megu-chan, Cutie Honey, and Majokko Tickle.

The only classic magical girl series I haven't seen is Himitsu no Akko-chan.

I love the old magical girl series, most of them were pretty good drama series. The later series dealt with pretty surprising themes and issues. I mean, shoot, I don't remeber Pretty Cure dealing with racism, substance abuse, or suicide. I also liked how each series brought something new to the table.



...Uh, that's what's on TV now. Magical girls didn't start out as "series about cute girls in skirts that fight evil with their nifty toys you can buy a Toys-R-Us near you". They were series about witches, and girls with special powers (usually in a form of a magic item) that dealt with everyday problems, and such. Earlier magical girl series were more about how the main character matured. Cutie Honey and Majokko Megu-chan are the two series that turned the genre around. Sailor Moon was the series that revived it, and made it more popular worldwide.
 
I like some magical girl series,but nowadays don't really seek them out too much (Lately,I prefer shonen like Bleach,and non-"magical girl" shoujo series like Ouran High School Host Club)...

Card Captor Sakura was good (can't go wrong with CLAMP ;decent animation and storyline,also it was cute without being sickeningly so)...

Magic Knight Rayearth is another awesome CLAMP series,it was a little more "action-oriented" than shojo tenRAB to be,plus season one has one of the best twist endings I've seen in any medium...

Sailor Moon is a sentimental favorite of mine....It was the first anime I really got into,and though it's got alot of problems (an edited dub,transformations that take up a significant portion of the episode,episodes all having the same basic structure,aside from when the team goes to face whoever that season's main villains are),it's still a fun show with likeable characters...

Full Moon is also interesting...it's about a twelve year old girl with throat cancer who is given the power to transform into a healthy,17 year old version of herself in order to persue her dream...I'd like to see the entire anime series,but Viz stopped releasing it about halfway through (hopefully,the rest comes out eventually,though at least I've read the entire manga series)

Manga wise,I've also read....
Wedding Peach...wayyy better than the anime (which is kind of a Sailor Moon ripoff),at least the manga tells it's own story,which is nothing like Sailor Moon,other than having a team of magical girls...

Kamikaze Kaito Jeanne...I like Arina Tanemura's works (she also created Full Moon),and this was an interesting take on the "magical girl" concept...
 
While I've certainly read more than my fair share of stuff in and tangentially related to the genre, I've still yet to see anything that drew me in as well as Cardcaptor Sakura. The depth and quality of characterization and story just set it apart to this day, which maybe why the genre almost disappeared for a while. It set a very high bar, in as much as even the non card capture oriented episodes often delivered as much if not more in character and story. The relatively non-exploitative direction and feel are also perhaps unparalleled, atleast relative to other magical girl series aimed at the same children's audience (though one may argue that CCS was the last big mahou shoujo title aimed at children rather than than otaku and children.)

Plus, the genre has allowed for some very interesting experiments on top of the basic premise including a personal favorite of mine, Earth Maiden Arjuna, which maybe one of the more morally and socially conscious anime series in the past decade.
 
I don't watch very many magical girl shows. Most of them are very...saccharine.

Sailor Moon had too much whining in it, and from the three or four episodes I've seen of Wedding Peach, it's a little too much for my testosterone levels.

The only magical girl show I've ever watched that didn't make me gag was Magic Knight Rayearth, in part because of its decent writing and circumvention of schoolgirl stereotypes (e.g., Umi the rich girl wasn't a total snob and was actually pretty likable).
 
Yes, I've seen it. I own all the books, and I'm still holding out for a dub. I may be hanging on that for a while.

(So many people on the internet confuse Jeanne for Sailor Moon... )
 
Oh, and while I'm on the non-traditional magical girl track, Kami-Chu is probably the first magical girl anime since Cardcaptor Sakura to focus on character and depth with a similar level of attention, and I'd dare say it comes close to Ghibli-like quality, and certainly shares the studio's penchant for independent female leaRAB.

It's manga also coincidentally ran in the amazingly exploitative Dengeki Daioh magazine, proving that even the supposedly irredeemable moe movement has not only quality works works, but positive and uplifting ones.
 
The only magical girl show that truly caught my interest were the first two seasons of Nanoha, which ushered in the birth of GarMoe
 
Yeah, you know, with all the other series I watch, I forget that Kami-Chu is consider magical girl. That's also pretty up there in quality too. (Seriously, that ran in Dengeki Daioh?)

Well Ive enjoyed the few Ive seen as a Kid I enjoyed Watching Sailor Moon Just As much as I did DBZ & Gundam. When it comes to newer series I Somewhat Enjoyed Doremi becasue it had that innocent Hamtaro type vibe to it. and of course I also Enjoyed PPGZ The Japanese dub that is. I think PreCure is OK, & would watch it if it was on US TV, but thats only if there was nothing else on. Overall I think The Mahou Shojo genre is like anyother it has its ups & Downs some good shows & some bad ones. Personally I prefer Shonen Series Myself, but am not opposed to watching Mahou Shojo anime.

In Conclusion I would say its an entertaining genre, but many a time a little to sweet for my taste.
 
I like the magical girl genre.

I think that Magic Knight Rayearth and Wedding Peach are great series (I have both series on DVD). A lot of people won't agree with me on this, but I think that Wedding Peach is better than Sailor Moon.

I also found Sasami: Magical Girls Club to be a pretty cute series, and I'm planning to buy the series on DVD, someday.

Because it has been mentioned in passing...I think it must be pointed out that Revolutionary Girl Utena is a very special case since the show seems entirely predictable and almost stereotypical on the surface but, by the time everything has been said and done, many of the traditional expectations of the magical girl genre have been subverted or avoided. To the point that I would, in fact, even hesitate about applying such a label.

You certainly have a lot of girls and some sort of magic, plus many ritualistic transformation sequences and repetitive duels, but the show goes beyond the usual gender roles. Utena -the protagonist- doesn't want to be a princess, she wants to be a prince and acts like one. At the same time, the character who does start out as the princess that must be rescued, Anthy, isn't really limited to playing a passive role. That's just the basic idea, things get quite a bit more complicated along the way.

The series also deals, from time to time, with a certain nuraber of sexual topics and issues, but there's relatively little in terms of actual fanservice. If anything, the guys probably ended up showing more skin than the girls, come to think of it...at least until the Utena movie came out, but that's another story.

For a long time I was conflicted about watching the show, since everything seemed so...girly, but beneath that layer I found what was a very well structured and even quite psychological piece of work. In fact, sometimes the amount of syrabolism is absurd, to the point of being self-referential, but there's still plenty of food for thought.

What makes the show even more interesting is the fact it was made by a lot of the same people who were behind Sailor Moon's anime adaptation. You could even argue that the staff was consciously trying to do something new with the concept and within the whole genre, which they certainly accomplished as far as I am concerned.
 
True, WITCH is not an anime, but it is a Magical Gril show of sorts. Furthermore, anime is cartoons, just cartoons from Japan. People need to stop thinking of anime and cartoons as 2 separate beasts, because they're not. Being an import doesn't make it any less a cartoon.
 
I don't really watch Magical Girl series. Some of them can pull it off nicely, but some I just can't stand. Sailor Moon is cool, for nostalgia. :P I've been interested in looking into Magic Knight Rayearth, it looks nice.

I do like magical girl series. While I didn't see too much of it, I did enjoy of what I saw in the subbed version of Cardcaptor Sakura. I would get the DVRAB and I should at one point, but I would love to see someone redub the series, even though that may not happen any time soon.

I also love Fushigi Yugi and I have the entire series on DVD, including all three OVAs. I thought that it dragged a little bit in the middle of the series, but I thought that it was enjoyable. It was an emotional series, but I thought that was one of its best points. The storyline had a lot of twists for me that just made me watch episode after episodes on the DVD's.

I barely remeraber watching Sailor Moon, so I won't count that. I didn't see the second season of WITCH, but I thought that it was pretty good. I also like Winx Club, even though I found some more problems in the later half of season three. Still, I see it as a cute little series.
