Magellan GPS Companion + Tungsten T3 w/ Extended Screen - WORKS!

i have a Magellan GPS Companion for Palm M500 Series (MGPSC) and Palm Tungsten T3 (TT3).

the two work fine together with the TT3's screen in the collapsed/closed position, but the MGPSC's design (cradle-type) is not long enough to allow the TT3's screen to be extended without releasing the latches on the back that hold the two together.

i found that with navigation programs like mapopolis, you REALLY want as large a screen as you can possibly get. furthermore, you occasionally need to be able to enter text - to enter an address or whatever - which i found next to impossible without expanding the TT3 to expose the grafiti area.

so i opened the case of the MGPSC only to find that there was nothing but airspace inside the plastic case where the top of the TT3 would go if it could. there is a cylindrical antenna inside the housing, but it is up near the very top of the unit, not even close to where the TT3 wants to be.

so i used a small grinding wheel attached to an electric drill to grind away the bits of the case that were in the way. a dremel would also work well for this task. i was able to grind away enough plastic to allow the MGPSC and TT3 to work perfectly together without compromising the structural integrity. i put a small piece of plastic (not really necessary) in place over the small hole that resulted from the grinding and covered it with some black electrical tape. the result is barely noticeable when the cradle is empty and almost can't be seen at all when the TT3 is extended in the cradle.

tips:

opening the case of the MGPSC is not totally necessary for this.

if you do want to open the case, just remove the two small phillips screws, then snap apart the top and bottom. i opened it, but i did not bother to figure out how to completely separate the two halves. i left them connected at the bottom, near where the connector that plugs into the palm. with the two halves of the case separated, you can slip a piece of paper in between. this will help keep plastic dust out of the main part of the case while you are grinding/sanding.

of course, no mods to the TT3 are required for this.

my plan: use the MGPSC cradle, cigarette lighter adaptor, some kind of dash-mount, and either mapopolis or tomtom software to provide a make-shift in-car nav system, while still leaving the TT3 available for other general tasks. side benefit: the MGPSC also charges the TT3 when plugged into a 12V source.

comments/questions/suggestions welcome.

Hello I do not know much about this G.P.S. and never even saw it before. But wouldn?t this void the products whittiery ? Sorry I do not know how to spell It. If you bought a brand new G.P.S. and did this with it and it broke you would not be able to bring it back what would be the meaning of that ?

i'm not a lawyer, but i suspect that opening up the case and then taking a grinding wheel and grinding-off a big chunk of the housing is not covered under the magellan warranty.

since you brought it up, i'll go a bit further and say this: the above was simply a report of something that i did. i am not recommending or advocating that anyone else should do it. i am not providing an implied guarantee of anything if you follow my instructions. if you do so, your unit may work fine (as mine does), or it may explode in your hand in a ball of flames or it may simply cease to work. i take no responsibility. follow my directions at your own risk.

to address your issue at a more pragmatic level: this device costs only about $100 these days - probably $50 on ebay. by performing this mod, you may lose your entire investment if you screw up. on the other hand, if successful, you may derive a lot of benefit. heck, you could probably sell it as "tungsten t-series enabled" on ebay for double the price you pay for it. so the choice (and responsibility) is yours.

Hey that sounds like a cost effective way to get a gps working on the palm. One thing do you think we could find the magellian that you are talking about for a resonable price (under $100) on Ebay?

the unit appears to be under $100 new. i just searched found it for $96.95 without trying very hard. hint: use froogle.

so any ebay price should be well below that.

Thanks dduff617!

I own a companion and use it with my T3 constantly. I have wondered in the past whether or not it could be adapted for the extended screen and now I have my answer.

I just got a T3 myself and it's great news to hear that you got the GPS Companion to work with it. I had tried to do the same thing myself prlor to reading this post, but failed.

After attatching the GPS Companion to my T3, I tried to run Magellan's Nav Companion program, but it just crashed my T3.

I can't seem to find the documentation for my GPS. Do you happen to know the specs for it?

NMEA compatible?
What baud rate?
Handshaking?

That type of stuff.

My main goal is to run GeoNiche, a geocaching program. Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Unfortunately the software, which came with the Magellan is not OS5 compatible. I have been searching their website ever since I got my first Tungsten; but it seems, they consider the unit so outdated, that thei can not bother to rewrite the software.
I You need a "simple" GPS software, I can recommend
Cetus GPS which You can download from
www.CetusGPS.dk
Not only is it an exellent piece og software; but it is COMPLETELY FREE!
Try it and forget about the miserable lack of service from Magellan.

From what I can determine the Megellan Companion is NMEA 0183 ver 2.01 compliant with a baud rate of 4800.

I've always used Delorme's Street Atlas Handhled with it good results.

Hope this helps.

I have gotten the Magellan GPS Companion software for the 505 to work with my T3 (both NAVCompanion and Streetfinder). To accomplish this, I've installed the file "ldserlib.prc" on my T3. It is necessary to open and close this file after every soft reset. I found this solution after many google searches for an answer. The file can be downloaded here: http://www.drpub.fbe.fh-darmstadt.de/palm/

It's my understanding that this allows legacy programs to run on OS5. I have not noticed any adverse effects on any other software, including Mapopolis and Cetus.
