Made the switch to a -4...

...and I've got it working now, but what a PITA it was last night! My computer simply wouldn't recognize the installation CD, and the version of PC Sync that I had installed for my -3 wouldn't work for my -4. So I DL the NSeries PC Sync software from Nokia, I get it all working and go to do my maps... the current map installer is incompatible with that version of PC Sync. So then I DL the newest version of PC Sync, non NSeries version, but I've been lazy and didn't uninstall properly the other two versions on my computer, so now nothing is working. So I unintstall everything and reinstall the newest version. Finally get it working. Finally get map loader working. Discover that Nokia Life Blog is no longer part of the package. Argh. Find it on a 3rd party site (after some searching) install it and get it working. Now a whole bunch of my s60 apps won't install b/c of expired certificates!

Apart from those problems, the new phone (MIK) has two dead pixels and the GPS seems to be on the fritz. On my way to work it wouldn't lock onto anything (google maps or nokia maps), I shut down all the programs and restarted them, and that got the GPS to kick in. Not a good sign. I might have to exchange this one for another. After I just spent a whole night getting this one set up...

Oh, and for some reason it loves to put itself into portrait mode whenever the screen saver comes on. It switches back as soon as I start doing anything again, but I don't really like my screen saver being sideways! wth?

Haha, it's always SOOOO much easier to use just the generic version of PC Suite.

The screensaver being in landscape is how it is on the -2 and -4.

Boourns! I don't enjoy reading sideways, and I often have my phone in a car holder that keeps it upright.

Oh, that also seems to be a problem, when the phone is upright the angle doesn't work with my polarized lenses and I can't see the display! I have to swivel the whole thing, and Nokia Maps in better in portrait IMO.

I made the switch this week from the n82 to the n95-4 and so far the gps SUCKS!!!! I thought they were the same, but it takes much longer to connect and loses signal frequently. I did a direct comparison and couldnt believe how bad it was. Anyone else have this experience? Do you think my unit should be swapped?

Nope, you're right. The GPS on the -4 is much less sensitive (I think it is the position of the antenna) than the 82. I also have both phones, and in my tests the 95 was always ~10m less accurate than the N82 when driving.

I guess I should have done more research. I love the screen size and 3G, but gps is really important to me so i am dissapointed.

Make sure you have the slider up and if you have a data plan enable A-GPS, it locks much faster, my GPS locks on in 1-3 minutes tops.

If all else fails try resetting your phone *#7370# but make sure you backup your data first.

The GPS on my N95 locks in seconds as long as AGPS is enabled and you have data access. The more you play with the GPS the quicker mine locked. And as stated, the GPS is on the bottom of the phone so make sure the slider is open for best reception.

I was keeping it in between the seats of my car, so this may have had an impact based on the gps being on the bottom of the phone. This is where I keep my n82, so I assumed it would be the same. Im going to get a dashmount and see if this helps. I did have agps on with a data plan and the slider open.

Weird..My gps is great, especially much improved after the fw update. Locks very fast even inside. Outside it's even better. Very accurate so far, but I'm using google maps mostly, don't care for the nokia maps much. My complaint is the browser closes out of nowhere since the update. Didn't do that before. Maybe another update is coming, hopefully to fix that issue.

I have the old firmware, this could be part of the issue as well. I am using the garmin xt software and it closes randomly too sometimes. Ill try updating i guess.

My n95-4 gps connected in 10 seconds just like every other nokia s60 phone i've had. I never had any problems with the gps at all. Now i will admit my e71 gps is even better. The landscape screensaver is normal, who knows what nokia was thinking. The dead pixels is what would concern me...that isnt acceptable.
