Mad Men.

Er, - at the risk of sounding a bit obvious - why should you worry if a series continues after you no longer enjoy it? You are not going to be forced to watch it against your will are you?

Meanwhile those of who loved the first few episodes of this new series, and think that some of the recent programmes are the best ever, really hope that there will more to come in future.

I think that a rather un-nerving but brilliant dvelopment in the writing is the gradual way that Weiner is uncovering the raw emotions of Don, Betts and also Henry.

What was that line that Don came out with about never feelin in control or knowing how he feels.

And Betty's panic while on the loo smoking like a chimney.

And now the intensity of Henry. Leaving Don's boxes out by the kerb and not even acknowledging him.

Not so sure about Bethany's actions with Don in the cab. Although if it didn't sit right with me, I'm sure it did with Don.

'That Bethany looked .....15' Yes, Betts, a bit like the age you act a lot of the time!!!!!

This unravelling of the character's psyches, as well as their actions is adjusting the feel of the series ever so slightly. Then again, this may be deliberate as the years go by into the 60's with all the changes unfolding in society and culture.

Oh yeah. What was that vacuum cleaner for? Maybe it'll be revealed in the next show, or maybe it was just to show that she had to borrow her Mum's vacuum, because she didn't have her own.

I don't think there is anything else to it than just that.

My mum and gran used to share a vacuum in the 1970s. As Peggy rents a room in an apartment I am sure she is just borrowing her sister's.

Just another nice little authentic touch.

Absolutely. It now feels like Don's world is falling in on itself: first he has to sign the contract with Sterling Cooper, then he has to give up his extra-marital affairs when Betty learns who she's really married to. Can the house of carRAB collapse any more?

I can't help but wonder if Sterling Cooper being up for sale might figure more in the remaining episodes ... (No spolilers, please! :))

I just want Joan to come back to the office. Her face when Greg said the army mentioned a family was a picture ... Why can't she and Roger get back together? That phone call was indeed superb - so little said yet so much lurking beneath the surface.

I found this episode rather painful in many ways. It seemed to me so clear when Betty said that Don could talk anyone into anything, that she was desperate for him to talk her round too - but he just didn't bother. I didn't like the implication that Betty was envious of Mary Beth's rock-solid marriage, and therefore was trying to sabotage it by setting up the lunch with Arthur.

I also wondered, with the snippets of interaction with the lift man and Carla being clearly subservient to the white characters/their "superiors", whether there's going to be some civil rights element to the plot soon (we had a precursor of this with Joan's remarks about Sheila, the bearded guy's girlfriend).

This show often leaves me feeling rather disturbed, yet I'm still hooked on it.

Ah- I didn't realise that. Lots to go at there and you can see how seeRAB have already been sown. Great stuff. One thing we can be sure of, as you say, they will not get it wrong.

I want it now!

:eek::eek::eek:

This is so appalling it's not true.

So not only might Mad Men disappear off Freeview, we will have to pay extra to watch it.

Meanwhile, the government sits back and lets Sky do what they like because the Murdoch empire backed the Tories at the last election. It's dirtier than any deal Pete Campbell could come up with. Surely Sky should be investing more in UK-produced drama, rather than paying over the odRAB for something from another channel?

I, for one, refuse to pay extra and would much prefer to invest the money in future box DVD sets - be they Region 1 or 2.

My last shred of hope is that Matthew Weiner somehow intervenes and knocks the Sky deal on the head ... but I'm not holding my breath.:(

From the little we saw of his father - and the interactions between the two of them, Pete seems not to have been in control of his own destiny throughout his life. Although he comes from wealth and privilege, he's never been able to access it, even to the point of having his wife's parents fund their house. He even didn't get the job at Sterling Cooper on his own merit - it was only because of his society links (as Bert said). Getting into SCDP was only by dint of the accounts he could bring with him - not because of his inherent talent.
He also seems to have difficulty opening up to people - everyone except Peggy, for some reason and comes across as a rather lonely isolated individual. Maybe once his child is born we'll see a change in his personality.

I'm not looking forward to Bettys' storylines next series as I think they will be in the vein of 'out of the frying pan into the fire'. I like her character, and I think it would be nice if Henry was her happy ever after man though clearly that's very unlikely!

Am I the only one upset that the full cast may not be returning? I hope that the boys club is installed at the new company, it won't be the same without their bickering:cry:

Oh, and I was desperate for Betty to respond to Don calling her a whore with 'like your mother was?':D Though she probably wouldn't have made it to the next series either in that case!

Not much to add other than this series has been superb. The finale lived up to all expectations. Couldn't believe it when the credits rolled - 45 minutes passed so quickly.

Really looking forward to the next series. Really hopes it keeps up the very high levels of the first 3 series. Surely it's time for BBC1 prime time with a repeat of all 3 series before the new series.

One of the classic programmes of all time. Superb from start to finish.

For those of you who might not want to wait, episodes 10-12 are on Sidereel and 13 is on 56.com, thats not downloading by the way, its online streaming, youtube-esque screens, i think its not legal to upload, but its not illegal to watch!

Now you've reminded me of Jane boasting about her discretion, I'm convinced. That's what Don worked out and why he demanded she be removed from his desk - because she's anything but discreet.

And Roger, as brilliantly played as he is, is, I think, anything but intuitive when it comes to women: he's just easily distracted! (And please let Joan come away from this with her dignity intact ... at least).

I have to say I love coming on this thread: it's great to read what different posters took away from episodes. Indeed, it's so refreshing to have a television show that lets the viewer do some of the work and form their own opinions about what they've seen ...

Poor Peggy, I hope not though some of the signs are there. I'd really like to see her progress from secretary to advertising exec on her own merits, like some sort of indication of what's on the horizon with equality of the sexes rather than have her dreams quashed :(
