Mad Men.

I think it would ruin the authenticity of the show if they wern't allow to smoke, that's they way it was in those times.

Just take a look at some of the old black and white movies, the actors were never without a cigarette in their hand.

Last night's show was just fabulous.

How can I possibly still feel so sorry for Don, with his marriage crumbling, even though he's shown to be a serial adulterer?

During the last 5 minutes of the show I kept turning to my OH and saying in a stricken voice "I don't want this to end, I don't want this to end!"

Roll on next series!

Hhhhhm, I don't want to make myself massively unpopular here, but last night's episode just seemed to be a bit lacking, I thought. It all seemed fairly superficial, none of the subtle nuance and loaded dialogue Mad Men is renowned for.

And I really hated the Pete / Peggy storyline: it was silly and borderline slapstick :(

The new offices are very nice, mind you, but they're not the only thing lacking another level so far. Hope it starts to smoulder and simmer with the next episode.

BTW, how much would you LOVE grownup Sally to write a misery memoir?: 'No Mommy, not the sweet potato!' ;)

It's like a 'modern' day costume drama in a way.

The suits, ties, dresses ... even the office furniture, it all looks so stylish.

I'm loving it.

The emboldened part made me laugh. Especially after all the comments above about the British appearing overtly snobbish. It seems some of us are still prone to a little superiority complex :D

Yeah don't forget Don gave Sal the Bye Bye Birdie job *after* the hotel 'outing' incident.

He also promoted Sal to commercials director after he messed up the Bye Bye Birdie ad.

He has been nothing but supportive of Sal, despite knowing he is gay.

I also Googled to see what I could find about that comment, and really it's just blog posts and some journalists' opinions - none of the articles are definitive. One of them didn't even realise that Sal had gone to the park for a gay pick up after being fired (http://squareeyes.blinkx.com/2009/10/mad-men-s03e09-wee-small-hours/)

I do think the comment was directed at the 'people' of Sterling Cooper who, in Don's eyes, have been nothing but a PITA recently. But it was cleverly written to make you have to think about it, which is exactly what has happened in this thread!

He had a crush on Ken but time had jumped by the start of Season 3, so we don't know what happened there - presumably nothing.

I was very moved by the episode. The JFK assassination was history to me before- I was a baby when it happened so I didn't remember anything, but I've heard stories over the years about how people reacted. The clips of Walter Cronkite and Chet Humphrey announcing Kennedy's death were familiar to me from You Tube and movies, particularly the Oliver Stone film JFK. I didn't realize until last night how shocking the assassination was. When the CBS news bulletin broke in on the office TV it was chilling. The script expertly showed the impact on all the characters- it was amazing that Duck unplugged the set so he could get his nookie in with Peggy, then when they were done he wanted to switch it on again. The plot device that Roger's daughter was getting married the day after the assassination could have been corny, but the episode developed it very well: people's confusion over whether to go to it or not, and the crowd, including Jane, standing in the kitchen watching the news.

Jane is developing a drinking problem. I don't think she and Roger are going to last much longer. To be fair to Jane, I couldn't see the problem with the earrings she gave Margaret, I thought they were lovely. Margaret was acting like a whining brat; I'm glad she didn't act like that on the day of the wedding. Henry's encounter with Betty after Oswald was shot was strange, and their dialogue was almost out of a Mills and Boon. Does Henry really want to marry her? He hardly knows her. And where will the children come into it? It's a fantasy, partly Betty's fantasy and partly his. I don't think they are going to last very long. I can see Don going back to Suzanne but not for a while yet- Betty's leaving him has devastated him. I hope in the next series Joanie and Roger find a way to end up together, and Betty and Don come back to each other.

Doghouse Riley, I was 5 when Bobby Kennedy was shot and I can remember the announcement on TV. I didn't understand exactly what was happening but I was saddened by it.

I'm really trying to resist getting spoilers - so hard for me, it goes against my nature! I'm fed up that we have to wait so ridiculously long for it to come to the BBC.

Can you just hint if it's good though? :)

There's always the possibility that Dr Greg gets sent to Vietnam and comes back (more) damaged - physically, emotionally or both - making Joan the sole breadwinner and putting her more in the 'caregiver' role than ever.

But on the bright side, there's always a chance he'll die :D:o

She, her outfits and the programme in general are amazing.

Even the way Don dresses has influenced me. I recently bought a Hardy Amies suit based on an original 60s patterm and am teaming that with a very influenced Hugo Boss white shirt, narrow tie and pin to wear for my daughter's wedding in June! Just wish I could get away with the hat too!

I cannot wait for each episode but am dreading the season end:cry:

I see one of the on line clips showing Ep 1 still seems to be working, even if the AMC isn't, for UK viewers. I also saw something about the show being back on UK TV in 2010. Because BBC4's schedule is so packed I'm sure they couldn't possibly find room for a great show like Mad Men. Anyway, does anyone know approximately when UK viewers will be deemed worthy enough to be able to see it without having to nick it off the internet?
