hello all of you....

don't know why but... since a few days, whenever I launch palm desktop 4.2.1 on my mac, It "says" on the screen : locked file and whatever I write is not saved or transfered on my tungsten.... (this mac has panther 10.3.4)

if it rings a bell for you, do not hesitate to send your enlightments !

Sounds like you need to Repair Permissions.

Launch Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities), select your hard drive and Repair Permissions.

If that doesn't work, please let me know.

thank you ed for your advice

just as you proposed, i already repared authorisations.... that changed nothing ... then i went to "info" in the palm file and saw that it was locked.... i unlocked, then palm desktop was "reachable" and writable, then i quit palm desktop, went back later to it and.... again.... it was locked !
i went again to info, found it was locked and..... re -delocked again..... until next and, as you might guess, this is kind of boring !

thanx again

yes man, a real challenge in deed !

the self-locking file is called "palm" and contains all the palm sub-files such as desktop, tutorial, sync etc.... i did not delete or add anything !

OK. Download Onyx, launch it, enter your password, and select Optimize from the window. Verify and Repair Permissions (again) then run all Periodic Scripts. Restart your computer.

If that doesn't work, I have another idea.

thank you for your good cares, we must have close ideas since this was done yesternight and..... made no difference ..... please let me have your "other" idea if you have time for it

Make a new folder named Palm and put the contents of the original Palm folder into it. Then delete the original Palm folder.

We'll get it eventually.

full despair.....

after doing it (since it works once) , i quit palm desktop, came back to it and finally get the hated message "locked file"......

I think it came after the dowloading of the last desktop version last month.....

again, many thanks for your help

Perhaps it's time to delete your Palm Desktop and revert to the version on your installation disc.

I know, I know, you're probably already doing that. I need to call on you when I have problems.:D

It's obviously a Permissions problem but there must be a compatibility issue with the latest version of Palm Desktop.

this is monday morning here, again, ed "merci" for your help.
So far, i haven't revert to a desktop prior version but..... after all, it might be the solution.... what i do now on is keeping open palmdesktop app; it does not bother the ibook (i very rarely switch it off) and i can write down dates and other events on the calendar.... that way the palm file remains unlock. As you can imagine this is not THE smart solution but just a tricky way....

as you underline there must be a permission question held somewhere, i'll give a look on apple forum in case....

en joy your week

i'm having the exact same "file locked" issue. it is maddening. mine seems to be the actual "user data" file (stored in documents/palm/users) that is locked, not the application itself. so, please keep posting if anyone has any other ideas! thx!!

last trial seems to work.....

quit palm desktop
click once on your palm file
get info
go to owner & authorisation and unlock
apply to all "inside" elements
close the info window and check...opening again palm desktop

you're thru and it should or might..... be working again....

let me know

did this while you must have been writing your post ;) it didn't work until i restarted my machine. but so far, changes seem to be sticking (although i haven't restarted again yet to see if the problem re-appears).

thanks! :D

did this while you must have been writing your post  yes, more or less since i do not always trust my visual memory.... happy if it keeps on working on your mac... here i have restarted mine a few times (since the other day) and no more locked file message appeared (so far...)

enjoy your mac with palm desktop
