I have recently developed a lump in the bottom of my back / top of my buttocks which is making it very difficult for me to sit on hard seats (on buses, trains, park benches etc.) and to be honest i'm a little erabarrassed to see a doctor about it because of where the lump is.

I spend a lot of time sat on medium distance flights and I also do a fair bit of cycling. I have a suspicion that these two activities may have contributed to my situation...

Does anybody have any advice on what I should do. I am almost certain it is some muscular problem, however the lump is really tough and feels like a bone sticking out or something. I can still move about reasonably freely but I don't want it turning into a serious spinal injury which could wreck both my personal and working life.

Thanks

Well I can tell you the doctor has seen more than his fair share of butts! dont worry about where its at....the doctor will be focused on whats wrong and may not even look close at all.....he may want an X-ray or MRI to see whats going on and never even look....I have a lump in the same area and the doctor never even looked at it....but we knew it was inflamation/swollen from disc injuries....get it checked out....make him earn his money and stick that butt out there. lol

Dont be one of those who dont get it checked out and enRAB up with something that can be fixed only at an "early" stage.

Good luck and keep us posted.

SounRAB exactly like the boney lump/bump on my lower back (L5/S1 area). Although mine is due to my grade 2 spondylolisthesis. But it DOES make it painful to sit on hard surfaces...and especially uncomfortable when trying to do abdominal crunches or anything that requires me to lay flat on my back. I always have to use rolled up towels or thick-cushioned mats under my back to cushion the boney protrusion. Mine almost seems like it might be some kind of bone deformity or something. I would almost bet on it that it's connected in some way to a lower back issue. Are you having any lower back pain (other than on the lump itself)? I'd definitely have it checked and possibly have an x-ray done.

Like Devon said, the doctor's seen all that and much more. Trust me, it won't be an issue for him at all. Unless you did something illegal or immoral that caused this, you have no reason to be erabarrassed about a health problem. Just treat this matter of factly and GO TO THE DOCTOR! You need to have peace of mind about this, if nothing else! Let's hope it's nothing, but please don't ignore it.

Come back and let us know what he said.

Take care,
Emily

Okay, Okay

I went to see my local doctor today who has referred me to the Hospital for a scan. He thinks it could be a hernia caused by repetitive strain injuries. I'm a bit worried because I have heard that hernia's are usually fixed by surgery.

Does this mean I am going to get cut open

Yes, every time I reach up or sit down in my car the pain is quite definately there. My doc put some of these electrode paRAB on there this morning and that eased the pain a little. ***REMOVED**
A friend did recomend I buy one of these memory foam mattresses but they are awfully expensive! Has anybody used one and could you tell me if they are worth the money. Obviously if I am going to buy it online I won't get to try it out first

I sleep on memory foam due to some hardware that protrudes just slightly and bothers me to lay on. The memory foam helps a lot, but for a hernia, that's going to be just a bandaid on your problem. A hernia surgery is not a big surgery. It will cause you some pain for a while, maybe a week, but you'll be glad to get it dealt with. And then you'll be FINE! Don't think of it as getting "cut open." Think of it as repairing a problem. You can do that, okay? You bit the bullet and went to the doctor, right? So now go to the next step. Look at it a step at a time. Don't let yourself dwell on it or fret about it. If you find yourself getting worried about it, you've got to force your mind to think about something else instead.

You hang in there! I wish you the best as you get your problem resolved.
