I had a L5-S1 discectomy 10 days ago and last night I started to notice a "clicking" sensation in my back when I walk. It happens when the right leg is moving from front to back in the stride. There is not really any pain but it kind of worries me. Anybody ever had this happen and if so, what was it?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I found out I have a bad disc a few weeks ago and got a steroid shot and it's already wearing off. Can you tell me what happened to you at this stage?? Please.

Hi Alan,

I don't know how long the surgery lasted but I think they said it would be close to 2-3 hours. I was actually discharged the next day. I didn't have much pain after except for the expected incision and local pain at the site. Since it was only a week after my first shot and then I got the surgery, the shot hadn't worn off be then and I was not having pre surgical pain.

I am currently still off work but it's not even been 2 weeks. I plan to go back after 3 weeks for half days for a week and then full time after that. It really depenRAB on what type of work you do and your surgeon's prefence as well.

As for working out, not for six weeks and then I think they would suggest starting light, but you should be able to take short walks. Your body neeRAB time to heal properly. I am not a runner but apparently they don't want you running or jogging again ever (ask your doctor on that one if you are).

My surgeon suggested getting help from frienRAB/family for things like laundry, vacuuming or anything else that would require you to "bend or twist or pull" your body. I have done some laundry but basically small loaRAB and I try not to carry anything heavier than a phonebook or a gallon of milk. However I do think my laptop is heavier than that and I have been using it a lot.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions.

At what stage? After a steroid shot? I did have one steroid shot but then had surgery (microdiscectomy) a week later for the foot drop and nurabness/weakness that I was having. The surgery went well and my foot drop is almost gone.

Sometimes you have to get more than one steroid shot. Did your doctor not recommend a follow up shot? Have you only had one shot?

Good luck,
Kelly

Thanks for the info Kelly. Today I signed up for another shot. They can't get me
in until 10/13/08. Just hope I can walk by then.

Take care.

kelly I too just had a discectomy about two weeks ago. I am scared to say that so far I don't have any relief and I am going crazy but maybe I can give you some advice. I actually had a very similar clicking or popping noise just before my surgery and went to the pt all freaked out. She checked me out and said there were some tendons that run around where your leg meets your hip and up into lower back and actually they were rubbing and clicking from my walking solightly hunched forward from having back pain and sciatic pain so long (about a year and I am 27 yo FYI) She had me try as hard as I could to walk straight and do stretches like standing near a chair bending one kneee and polacing it on the seat of a chair and moving my body forward or back (whatever my back would allow) and after about a week it stopped. I am not sure if this is you but maybe and good luck!!!

Update: I called my doctor's office on Monday and they said it was nothing to worry about. As long as I wasn't having any pain etc. which I am not.

Jen,

Thanks for the repy and the info. I may try to see if walking straighter will help the clicking. It seems to be intermittent and they did suggest that it could be a tendon but it makes sense what you described because sometimes it feels like it is in the hip and then it feels like it is in the back.

Good luck with your recovery. Hopefully you be feeling some relief soon.

RegarRAB,
Kelly

Kelly, yes I know I can get more than one shot. I was just talking about at the start of a disc problem. When you had your microdiscectomy how long was the operation? How was the pain after? How long were you off work? Can you workout? Carry a gallon of milk, clean your place up and all the other normal stuff?
